Jorvic centre York

Can anyone tell me if it's OK / good for a one YO little boy?

I'm going there soon, and wondering where to take my son... It'll just be me and him so I'll have the buggy too...

I tried to call them, but just keep getting an answer phone message! If it's NOT suitable, could anyone give me some alternatives in the city centre...

He's mobile but not (that) steady on his feet.

No, I wouldnt say its appropriate at all, most of the visit involves a carriage ride - so you wouldnt be able to take the buggy on with you. Plus it is a very short visit, Id say 30 mins max. Not worth the money IMO

I do remember the carriage ride - I went years ago when I was at Uni - and I did wonder if I'd be able to cope with the buggy too.

What's York Minster like? Or should I just take him to the train museum?

the Castle Museum is really good, probably more accesible?

If he's anything like my two small boys - train museum will go down very well indeed. Jorvik is expensive (and it smells funny). Castle museum is good too, but think he'd appreciate it more in a couple of years.

The Jorvik would only really appeal if he was a bit older, imo. Plus they were not particularly helpful when we turned up with the buggy - and didn't tell me when I was being shown where to leave the buggy (unsupervised open area) that I couldn't take the daysack onto the ride until I tried to board it, so had to trek all the way back upstairs with it and leave the kids downstairs.

The Jorvik were brilliant when I was recovering from an injury - front of the queue/wheelchair etc and I loved it. However, I wouldn't take a young child.

Myabe this site will have a few ideas.

You could always try the National Rail Museum in York.It is free,and has Thomas and is fab if it is a rainy day as it is indoors.

I think my ds was about 18 months old the first time he went to the railway museum and he has always loved it.

I went to Jorvik with DS (4) and DD (13 months at the time) a couple of weeks ago. Now, DD did enjoy it -- she sat on the carriage ride with eyes as big as saucers and clearly liked all the sights and sounds and smells. But it's not in any way geared for that age group, and I wouldn't have gone if I hadn't wanted to go myself and thought DS would enjoy it. If you want to go to Jorvik again yourself (it's been expanded a bit since you last went, I think (depending on when you went before)) then your DS will probably be perfectly happy to tag along, but don't do it for his benefit.

Castle Museum is good, or the castle tower the name of which I forget just outside (although your DS on the battlements may scare the whatsits out of you if you have any issue with heights). River trip, if the weather is nice?

Or an open-top bus ride -- tourist central, but DCs tend to love that sort of thing?

Given that he has already started with a love of all things (i) with wheels (ii) with engines (iii) metallic (have you ever seen an 11MO happily watch a GP!!??!! That's my son!!!! ) I'm going to go for the railway musuem.

Thanks again for all the help. I have to admit, I have no urge to return to the Jorvic centre myself and will save the money for shopping instead!!!
