self-catering Devon/Cornwall

Hello! We are going to visit Devon/Cornwall (probably mainly Cornwall) in mid-June with our 4 year old ds. We're hoping to be based sort of centrally so we can explore during the day (by car mainly I think) so self-catering is our ideal option. I've never been and though from my perspective (I'm from Canada so am used to vast distances when traveling!) it looks like everything is quite close together distance-wise, I reckon there are lots of twisty roads so it would take awhile to cover any area. So far we have only settled on definitely seeing the Eden Project, plus the aquarium in Plymouth looks good as well. Anyway, enough rambling, can anyone suggest a good location to base ourselves from?

Many thanks!

Haven't been yet, but we've booked The Valley at Carnon Downs, near Truro. It looks really nice and has good reviews. It's also very central, but you will need a car.

If you might be wanting to cover a large area, I guess anywhere close to the A38 (or A30 beyond Bodmin) makes sense. The South Hams area of South Devon is very beautiful, but perhaps not central enough. Or how about the Tamar Valley? What kinds of things will you be wanting to see/do? And how much do you care about having nice immediate surroundings (beach/town/countryside)? We're all excited at the prospect of staying here in St. Ives in April, but it's not exactly central either. Hope you have a lovely time!

Are really good. Part of/right beside a low key, chilled 5* hotel and you can use their facilities (pool and spa) and (v child friendly but chic)restaurant if you want. 5 mins from a great surfers beach Polzeath - super for kids. Day trips to Plymouth, Eden, St Ives etc easy. Tescos at Wadebridge 10 mins drive away.

thanks everyone! I forgot I had posted this, what with getting onion sets in the ground and all!
