south devon....good sandy beaches please

Looking at cottaes....where is good to be near. Only critea is a nice sandy beach to make sand castles please

Thurlestone is where we went as kids and i love it.

I like around Salcombe, Thurlestone, Hope cove, Bigbury. All very good sandy beaches. Thurlestone is quiet compared to the others.

Do NOT go to south east Devon. Boy, was I disappointed by their beaches last year

I agree with Fennel. Bigbury, Bantham and Hope Cove are good. Salcombe itself doesn't have very big beaches, especially when the tide comes up.

Bantham Bigbury Thurlestone and Hope Cove are probably the best if you have you have younger children as they have car parks close to the beach & toilets. If you prefer somewhere more remote & don't mind a walk, Soar Mill & Gara Rock are nice. The Salcome estuary has East Portlemouth, which has the best sandcastle sand anywhere and Millbay which has a stream with great dam-building possibilities (as does Hope Cove) but if you want to get to either of those by car you have to go very early.

Hi, i love Salcombe. We have 4 kids and just walk or go on the ferry (which the little ones love)to the beaches. Have a look at www.devonholidayhouses.co.uk and see the reviews on mums net. Just enter crossways into the search.

Oh I concur with Fennel, and also should add those of dragons list too! There is an estate that has cottages for hire, some of which are right on the beaches themselves - Flete Estate. Very nice.

I personally spend most of my time at Bigbury and Wembury as good parking and easy access to beach (I have a kayak so do not want to haul it too far, but also like Blackpool sands, Bantham and for ease of getting to from the City - Bovisand (the last two without kayak) All around that area, just fab, fab, fab.

Pointy - where did you go? If south east - Exmouth? Dawlish?

If you go just over the border then you get the very beautiful (& ime not too busy) Whitsand bay.

Oh yes funny - and Portwrinkle and Seaton (cornwall, not devon) is lovely too!

All true - and you can practically throw stones into Devon from Port Wrinkle, so it nearly counts

We've been going to Bigbury for years - this is me (in the middle) with my sister & my mum with the tractor that takes you across the the island at high tide. They still have one, but its a bit more modern than this - this was about 50 years ago...

(I meant cornwall, not devon, as in there is a Seaton in both Devon and cornwall).

Pavlov - according to my brother they've got a new one - apparently the tracks are different - I wouldn't know myself, but my brother is the kind of person who points out that the cars in a film are wrong because that model didn't come out until six months later , so he's probably right.....

LOL, yes it is different really, but not that much....!

I also have this picture of me & my dad at Lannacombe - that's a lovely beach, but I haven't been there for years because the parking is so bad - you used to have to get there really early & then you'd be there for the day because other people would park behind you. Last time I went there I walked from my Dad's house in Chillington (about 10 miles)

We use kayaks (so park with easy access to the beach) at Hope cove, also North and South Sands at Salcombe, and Thurleston.

We also go to the beaches at Exmouth, Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth, we live near those, but I wouldn't personally go on holiday to those places. They have lots of good sand and playgrounds and amusements for children but they're "town beaches", and I wouldn't go all the way to Devon for beaches and stop at those.
