We have proper rain in London just not this year. I used to commute through the Rotherhithe tunnel to work and once as I came out the other side into Limehouse I swear it was as if I was driving into a waterfall.
The tunnel has its own atmospheric conditions in the rain, by the way, put your ventilation on and heated front window if driving into it in the rain, as your windows instantly fog up. It makes it even more exciting driving through what is already a strange and disconcerting experience.

I’m going to buck the trend and say Manchester, every time I go it rains, every single time and I’ve been there lots as I’m only 40 miles away. Been to Wales loads, been to Mull, been to Dublin and Galway and Belfast, been all round the Lakes and it’s still Manchester. Love it but always damp.

Wrong. I have lived in Manchester all my life and the "rainy city" tag is a myth. Our weather is temperate with no extremes.
I love Manchester

The astounding myth: Rainy City? Does it really always rain in Manchester?

The truth about Manchester rain might astound you...

Sydney. More rainfall per year than Manchester and comparable number of rainy days. Seriously. When the rain sets in it sets in for days on end. I’ll never forget the time some friends had their family over for the first time from the Uk for Christmas and new year and it shat it down for two solid weeks. And it’s windy with it. They were fumming (sic)

Well apart from living in Scotland which I won’t count, it’s Florida in the summer. Rained almost everyday for 2 wks. Sometimes it was only 10mins but a few times it was on and off for hours. 1 day it was torrential rain with thunder and lightning for about 8hrs non stop!

Cork City. Soaked through my rain jacket and washed my make up off.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 14/10/2026 10:12

Belfast I have never seen rain like it

Spent a week of nothing but rain in Bedgelert in Wales - with slate mines all around. It was one of the most miserable depressing weeks of my life. If I hadn't bee 8 and unable to drive I'd have driven home. In fact I'm surprised I didn't try. I don't know why my mum insisted on sticking it out. In a house with paraffin heaters and no central heating.

It's really put me off Wales.

Snowdonia. Specifically during a week-long mountain skills course at Plas y Brenin. Had to drive the 2 hours home with the car windows down because every single bit of my gear was sodden and kept steaming up the car.

Also Oldham.

Normandy- the one time we decided to do a camping trip of over 3 nights (I think it was 5) and it poured most days. I was literally in tears one morning. The site did have a big sheltered barn at least!

estrogone · 14/10/2026 10:24

Brisbane Australia 1200mm in 3 days.

It was like living inside a shower for 72 hrs

Wolmando · 14/10/2026 10:25

Anywhere in the west of UK

DierdreDaphne · 14/10/2026 10:32

Fort William.

Though I did visit Manchester once in such heavy rain that the drops kept disabling the touchscreen on my phone when I was trying to navigate to my hotel. When I got to the wrong one I gave up and ordered an Uber for the 10 minute walk the rest of the way

We were now live in south wales near border- we've lived in may parts of England including Manchester.

It's not just the number of wet day it's only place I've seen such heavy rain - it's hard to explain but I've encountered normal heavy rain and then this area has super charged heavy rain like bullets raining down and bouncing back up like hail does. Also place I've endured the heaviest hail stones falling in storm.

The south west costs of New Zealand. We were staying in a place called Wataroa and 52 inches of rain came down over a 2 day period. Never experienced anything like it, just constant heavy rain for almost 36 hours straight. Nowhere was flooded as it happens regularly but the river went from a trickle to a raging torrent.

Do you remember when we had snow over most of Ireland but Kerry was the only place on the satellite map that was still snow free?

I do! My son was born in England and lived in the east midlands till he was seven and many of his early winter memories are of tobogganing and building snowmen -- he feels very hard done by that we now live somewhere with virtually no snow, ever!

Svalberg · 14/10/2026 10:39

Lake District. Always rains when we're there.

Wettest I've got outside the UK was Iguazu, but that's because I went under a waterfall

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · 14/10/2026 10:40

Maddest rain I’ve ever seen was Australia- flooded the place for twenty minutes then water gone within an hour with the heat! Live in Ireland and we get a lot but I live amongst the greenest of green so would rather rain and wind than extreme heat

aintnospringchicken · 14/10/2026 11:07

Arran

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 14/10/2026 11:08

Mull..currently there and it's very wet.

Teenawilko · 14/10/2026 11:11

I’ve been to many “wet” countries, but the wettest place I’ve ever experienced was July in New Delhi! It started raining (monsoon) the day after I arrived and it was unbelievable!! Everyone was walking without shoes and it was like being in a shower at home with all your clothes on within a minute of being outside.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 14/10/2026 11:12

Cornwall in winter seems relentlessly damp. But for year-round rain it feels like Manchester - it's only at the height of summer that I know I can sit on a dry bench at lunchtime.

Inextremis · 14/10/2026 11:13

Another vote for Mayo, on the northwest coast of Ireland. I live here. I love it, and have not quite gone rusty yet. We had more sunshine than we're accustomed to this past summer. It was strange, and a couple of my trees died. The rain's back now, accompanied by howling wind, and everything's right in my world again :)

Blueuggboots · 14/10/2026 11:13

Fort William. It didn’t stop raining for 5 days and we were camping…..

BaronessBomburst · 14/10/2026 11:59

Isn't Leenane (Galway/ Mayo border) supposed to be the wettest place in Ireland?

MrsUrdd · 14/10/2026 12:01

Lancashire, and i live in Wales
