Stonehenge for Winter Solstice

I’m thinking about going to Stonehenge for the Winter Solstice. Has anyone been? Was it fun? Should I book accommodation nearby or just drive there very early ?(l’m in Essex) I’ve read the English Heritage site stuff but would like to know a bit more.
I’d really appreciate any comments or recommendations!

Yes and yes! Go, take the kids too! You probably need to book parking (check the website). I drove early but am a lot closer than Essex so depends on how well you travel at that time of the day... We got up, arrived about 6.30 then walked to the stones, left about half an hour after sunrise and went for McDonald's breakfast 😂 Great experience even if you don't see the sun.

Also look at Avebury. I find it more interesting than Stone Henge. It’s close to me so more accessible. It’s an
open site and you can walk around the stones and touch them, unlike Stonehenge.

There’s a few places in Amesbury to stay which is really close. You do need to book tickets too to park.
