Airport security discarded ALL my frozen expressed milk before our flight

Nadsthakur · 12/07/2026 01:40

During security screening, approximately 25 ounces of my frozen expressed breast milk was confiscated and discarded. I was told that because it was frozen, it could not be tested and therefore could not be taken through security.

I explained several times that this milk was for my 8-month-old daughter, who is unable to latch and is exclusively fed expressed breast milk. This was not simply a drink or an inconvenience, it was my daughter's only prepared source of nutrition for our journey. Despite explaining this, I was told there was nothing that could be done, and I had to stand there and watch as the milk was thrown away.

I cannot put into words how upsetting this was. Expressing 25 ounces of breast milk takes an enormous amount of time, dedication and physical effort. It means pumping throughout the day and night, carefully storing every bottle and planning ahead. Every ounce represents hours of work. To have it thrown away in front of me, after explaining exactly how important it was, was absolutely heartbreaking.

What made the situation even worse was the attitude of the officers involved. Throughout the interaction, I felt they showed very little empathy or understanding of how serious this was. I was clearly distressed and repeatedly explained that they were taking away my baby's only food for our journey. Rather than trying to help, showing compassion or explaining whether there were any alternative screening options, my concerns were simply dismissed.

After my daughter's food had been thrown away, I was handed a customer feedback card and sent on my way. It genuinely felt as though nobody cared that an 8-month-old baby had just lost the only food I had prepared for her. The complete lack of compassion shown towards me as a mother was deeply upsetting and made an already distressing situation even worse.

Instead of looking forward to our holiday, I boarded an international flight feeling anxious and devastated, worrying about how I was going to feed my daughter while we were away. No parent should ever be put in that position.

Before travelling, I checked the guidance available to passengers. Ryanair's website clearly states that parents travelling with an infant can bring as much baby milk as needed for the flight, provided it is presented for inspection. I relied on this information when preparing for our journey. At no point was I made aware that frozen expressed breast milk could be refused because it could not be tested, and I was given no alternative option when I reached security.

I do not know the names of the officers involved, but im sure they can be identified through CCTV footage and staff rosters for the security checkpoint.
I want Manchester Airport to provide a full explanation of why my daughter's expressed breast milk was confiscated.
The specific policy or security procedure that required it to be discarded.
An explanation of why no alternative screening method. The time and physical effort it took to express and store it, and the significant distress, anxiety and disruption this caused to both me and my family.im supposed to enjoy my holiday and now im stressed in morroco about how I will feed her. She doesnt latch and only has expressed milk. Besides complaining to the Airport what else can I do so no other family goes through this.

I don’t mind. It’s entirely up to you how you post.

Well stop concerning yourself or commenting on it then? Or is it ok for you to comment like that because you’re “stressed”?

I was assuming some sort of cool bag. But I honestly don't think a cool bag would keep it properly frozen for that long.

I thought that. My life is so boring Im now trying to calculate frozen time!

Snizzwizzler · 12/07/2026 20:04

Ach she’ll be fine. It’ll do her good to take on board the overwhelming response that she’s being quite precious about it all.

What am I missing? She replied briefly just three times after her initial post. None of them was combative, and the last one acknowledged her mistake? I genuinely don’t understand why she’s still getting such a harsh response.

Can relate to a boring life! I was thinking perhaps that amount of milk would last through a day of travelling while also continuing to pump. Thinking back to when mine were that age, they were on solids, but not a lot, and probably would rely more on milk while travelling. So maybe you’d get through quite a bit?

“Sigh” gosh this is hard work!

She said she’d read Ryan Airs website not the airports, like Ryan air had not made it abundantly clear that its liquid milk, not frozen stuff!

Not really admitting she was wrong, was it?

‘Stop concerning myself?’ Haha, that told me Grin

The reason I’m replying on this thread at all is that I think after the OP’s initial post, she’s only responded a few times with the last post accepting her mistake.

So, I’m not sure why she’s continuing to get such a dressing down unless people are misconstruing it or somehow enjoying it? Hopefully she’s not seeing any of the responses at this stage.

Yes. We can agree it’s certainly hard work.

OP - hopefully you’re not still here, but if you are, I hope you’re feeling better now, and that your journey has been successful

limetrees32 · 12/07/2026 20:27

I think the issue here is that the staff were so.unfeeling.
Yes they were acting correctly but would it have killed them to show a little sympathy and kindness?

Because you’re fuelling the thread, by keeping it going?

Tagging people, commenting on posting styles, telling them how wrong they are.

But of course your concern is for OP, not to try and browbeat people into agreeing with you!

The only reason I’m responding is because you keep tagging me.

The OP kept arguing, by her own admission! They’ve got a long queue of people to deal with! Some running late for flights, some with BF babies that need to be fed. Some stressed as they’re in need of a flight for sad reasons.

They cannot ignore all those to argue with OP!

it was a no, they explained why.

limetrees32 · 12/07/2026 20:36

It's possible to deal with someone quickly but also kindly.
Takes no more time. Possibly less as compliance more likely to be achieved in a shorter space of time.

What might this have looked like? We only have the OP to go on:

“I was told that because it was frozen, it could not be tested and therefore could not be taken through security”

Everything else she has written smacks of hyperbole and histrionics. The security staff likely explained the rule and that she couldn’t take the milk on board. It’s something to just accept and learn from. All the talk of compassion and so on is missing the fact that the staff have likely had a bitch of a day too. I’d hate to have their job and have to deal with this sort of thing.

I’m sure they start off empathetic but there comes a point when they are going round in circles repeating themselves and they have to shut it down

We have no idea what sort of tone Op used with them.
A little sympathy, Sorry Op but your not allowed to take frozen milk through security.

End of the day that's the rules. The second the airport security create a loophole someone will exploit it.

How could they tell the difference between frozen cows 🐄 concealing knifes or packets of drugs and breastmilk?

Simple they couldn't.

Again with the mystical sympathy and kindness that doesn't have any definition. They're security officers, not counsellors. They have a shit load of people and planes to protect and they get people trying to break the rules all the time. What exactly were they supposed to do that wasn't a massive time waste, held up a load of people and communicated the importance of these rules?

It's not kind to coddle and waste time when you're trying to keep flying buses safe in the air. There's a bigger picture here than hurt feelings at having to jettison something you weren't supposed to have. What exactly is this sympathy and kindness meant to look like and how much time can it take out of the day?

Yes, I don’t know how the staff reacted, but I do remember how soul-destroying it felt to lose some hard-won expressed breastmilk and and then the worry about how you were going to replace it in the timeframe needed. I definitely think that goes a long way towards understanding the upset in the situation.

Shouldn’t have taken it, the rules are clear!

Shouldn’t have argued once that was poured out

Shouldn’t be looking at making a complaint after the event!

You’ll also note that OP made it to Morocco but didn’t advise how she replaced the only nutrition available to her child?

You have no idea what they did or how they presented. They could have gone home and burst into tears for poor OP for all you know

What does your idea of performative 'feeling' look like anyway?

A cuddle - oh no thanks, inappropriate touching
A kiss - SEXUAL ASSAULT
Calling her pet/flower/hen - patronising
A cheeky wink - goady
Talking in a whispery voice while giving intense eye contact, perhaps tearing up a bit in that eye - creepy and sinister

ThatCyanCat · 12/07/2026 21:01

I think a lot of it is just displaced upset at having to can the milk (which I really understand) after having made a mistake. There's nothing they can do to make that easier but it definitely had to be done and sadly, it was OP's mistake (an understandable one but her mistake nonetheless) so there isn't anyone else to blame.

So the coping mechanism for OP and those who sympathise becomes "well I didn't like the way they did it", with no real idea of what a better way would be... and any ideas would be unworkable anyway. They simply don't have the resources and time to counsel everyone who tried to bring forbidden items to their satisfaction.

limetrees32 · 12/07/2026 21:01

@ThatCyanCat you want a definition and explanation of what kindness looks like ? You think it equates to coddling ?
Consider this - it takes no longer to be sympathetic than it does to be brusque and it may even speed things up when dealing with someone who is objecting or is upset /., angry about the message being delivered.

Again, totally meaningless. I ask what exactly they should have said and done and your answer is a bit of blether and "be sympathetic".

There was no way they could indulge this to OP's satisfaction and they've got a lot of work to do. If there's a lesson to take from this, it's not "complain about undefined sympathy and kindness while some overworked official tries to get zillions of passengers safely on board when they try to break the rules". It's "read and check the rules thoroughly so they don't come as a nasty surprise".

@ThatCyanCat a dictionary or Google can be helpful if you don't understand what certain words mean .
Have you ever wondered why police officers ( those that act professionally and are good at their job)are polite and respectful towards the general public even when. discussing a wrong doing ?
