Affordable places to stay near Edinburgh Airport before driving to Mull

Morning! Looking for some advice on where to stay near-ish Edinburgh Airport. Flying from Exeter to Edinburgh in June and then hiring a car to get to Mull. It will be myself, my 3 year old and 1 year old baby so going to break up the journey by staying somewhere not too far from the airport and then doing the second leg the following day.
The airport hotels are £200+ (more than the flight!) so would really really like to not pay anything close to that for one night. Just somewhere clean and safe but have no idea about what area to go to. Any help would be very welcome (My first big trip with them both solo!) Many thanks x

There are three or four Premier inns in Falkirk which is about 20/30 mins along the M9 and on the way to Mull - I’d try them.

Check out Princess Street Hostel. It is close to public transport if you want to do things in Edinburgh..
If picking up your car from airport when you fly in, try Metro Inns Falkirk, Premier Inn Falkirk, Black Bull Inn Polmont or book with airb&b..

Definitely look at less popular towns near Edinburgh if just staying the night. The drive up to Oban is stunning so you'll get your scenery then. Larbert, Falkirk, Grangemouth. Polmont and linlithgow will likely be more expensive. The airport is to the west of the city so you don't have to go near Edinburgh unless you want to. Mull will be lovely, enjoy.

Definitely get yourself along the M9 a bit, there are no cheap hotels near Edinburgh Airport, no idea why, but I have been caught out that way many times in the past.

What time of day do you land? The Kelpies/Helix Park are right along your way, might be fun for your 3 year old to have a look. Overnight near Stirling, or Lintlithgow comes up sooner, only about 20 minutes from Edinburgh Airport.

We stayed at the Inchyra in Grangemouth overnight last year around 25 mins from the Airport in a family room for £130 and that included breakfast. We joined the McDonald Hotel preferred club which was free and I’m sure it was 20% we saved on the room. It has a pool and was perfect for an overnight stay. I just had a look at random date in June and if you join preferred they’re doing a family room from £111 with £25 food on a recharge and rest deal.

Oban is magnificent. The more time you have nearer there and on Mull, the better.

Thank you everyone - this is my first post on here so I really appreciate the responses! Will look up everything mentioned. Really looking forward to the trip.

I agree with Falkirk. There is a lovely premier inn just off the M9 with a beefeater restaurant.

if youve not already done so, book your ferry now ASAP. they book up unbelievably quickly.

When are you travelling? I wonder if you're hitting the highland show dates which is causing the prices to be so high (it's next door to the airport). Anywhere along the M9 between edinburgh airport and Stirling puts you well within an hour of the airport. Falkirk is good shout, you could head to the Kelpies and Helix park for around with the kids.
Also check South Queensferry which is very close to the airport and has a Premier Inn on the outskirts and Hawes Inn overlooking the bridges is often quite reasonably priced.

Another vote for Falkirk. The Premier Inns are good value and the Kelpies / Helix Park are fun for children if you have a spare couple of hours. And Mull is amazing - have a great time.

MrsMoastyToasty · 30/04/2026 23:09

Which of the 3 different ferry routes are you taking?

June.

It's in the OP.

We stayed at the Premier Inn Falkirk East last year. It has seen better days, and the food at the Cadgers Brae next door wasn't very nice. However, the garden centre next door on the other side did a cracking breakfast.

I meant specifically in June, read the next bit of the sentence……

Oops. My apologies. I thought the highland show was later in the year 😳

ApolloandDaphne · 01/05/2026 08:23

I would try and get a fair way on that first day. At least to Stirling. There will be plenty options around there that aren't too expensive.

There is a huge Premier Inn in Stirling. It is nice than the one at Falkirk East, and with a wider choice of places to eat nearby.

The Royal Highland Show is 18th - 21st June.
