Yorkshire Dales or Peak District hotel recommendations

DH and I would like to have a couple of nights away, somewhere easily accessible from West Yorkshire. Money is effectively no object, so somewhere nice, but we want to feel comfortable and relaxed rather than being somewhere too posh and snobby.

Ideally in a town where we could walk to pubs / restaurants if we didn't want to eat at the hotel.

Nice scenery, obviously. I love walking, but sadly I'm not currently able to walk far (maximum a mile.) And I don't enjoy it when it's pissing down, so ideally with wet weather activity options in the vicinity.

Can anyone suggest a lovely hotel, inn etc which meets these requirements? I'm wondering about the White Hart at Hawes.

Hi Joy - unfortunately no recommendations from me as not based there but wanted to bump this thread - hope you find somewhere brilliant for your stay x

Highly recommend Pickering in North Yorkshire. Lovely town, lots of restaurants to walk to, shops, close to country walks, lots to do within easy driving distance.
We stayed at a B&B, but we had a few excellent dinners at the White Swan Inn in town and thought we might stay there if we went back.

BlancheSauvignon · 05/03/2026 15:25

Fox and Hounds Sinnington.

Black Swan Helmsley. Feversham Arms is ok if you're going to use the spa.

White Swan in Pickering is nice, stayed in the hideaway rooms a few times.

Wood Hall at Wetherby is nice. They actually put on activities for guests.

How about a Warner hotel www.warnerhotels.co.uk/hotels/nidd-hall-hotel?guests%5B0%5D=2&hotels=NH&flexible=true#searchPageArea

Ohjoyohbliss · 05/03/2026 19:05

I hadn't thought about Pickering as I was thinking about the Dales rather than the N Yorkshire Moors but I'll certainly look at it.

I've always thought I'm not old enough yet for a Warner hotel (my elderly relatives used to go to them) but I probably am now! Not sure DH would be keen, though.

Beck Hall in Malham is lovely and has a couple of beautiful walks on the doorstep.

Miloarmadillo2 · 05/03/2026 19:24

How about the Star or The Pheasant at Harome? Never been able to afford it but my parents go there for special occasions. We had a night at The Angel at Hetton for our 50th birthdays which was amazing but maybe a bit isolated for what you want?

SerenYork · 05/03/2026 19:24

Helmsley is lovely, as is Pickering!

There’s so much to do in the area depending on what you’re in to: Rievaulx Abbey, The Star at Harome or Tommy Banks at The Black Swan Oldstead for food, the White Horse for a walk, Pickering for the railway, Thornton le Dale is a pull for people that watch Bangers and Cash, Dalby Forest is lovely for walking and good facilities… but all of the above are commutable from each other.

Cavendish Hotel in Baslow

Grassington House Hotel in Grassington. Skipton and Ilkley on your doorstep if wet. Lots of walks long and short from the door. On the River. Situated in a lovely village with pubs and cafes. Not far from Bolton Abbey. Best cocktails around.

Cavendish Hotel in Baslow

Yes this, and can also recommend The Riverside Hotel in Ashford.

Also in Ashford, the Ashford Arms does rooms. I have not stayed there but have eaten there several times and the restaurant is very nice.

ETA if you stay at the Cavendish Hotel in Baslow I think they do a package that will give you access to Chatsworth. Might be worth it as it really is a must see if you are in that area and it can be pricey

GrannyGoggles · 13/03/2026 15:55

We were really disappointed with the Cavendish Arms. If you want to be near Chatsworth try one of the cheaper options in the group.

Loved The Abbey near Tommy Banks’ Black Swan, excellent food, more straight forward than BS.

fruitpastille · 13/03/2026 18:31

The Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey is swanky but we found it very welcoming - not snobby. It's not in a town but there is lots to do in the area.

Aysgarth Falls Hotel
The Stone House Hotel just outside Hawes

not Sure if this is a little late but good for the future in any case.

In the end we only managed one night away, but did use a recommendation from this thread. (Grassington House Hotel.) When we arrived, we had been upgraded to a room with a roll-top bath in the bedroom. Who wants a bath in the bedroom? It's not for me. It was under the telly too, so presumably the rising steam would obscure the TV picture. Anyway, a lovely night away and the food was lovely.

ETA: Oops, too many lovelies.

Thank you to everyone who gave suggestions and I hope to try out some more of them later in the year if I am allowed to travel again.

Hey, I would highly recommend glamping in the Yorkshire Dales! We booked ours through Wigwam Holidays, as they've got loads of different properties in Cumbria so were were able to find one with a private hot tub that we loved! Olive Magazine are also running a free to enter competition to win a £500 voucher for Canopy & Stars, which is another one I've looked at before with loads of different properties, but never booked with them in the end.

How about the Cavendish in the peak district?

Great choice Joy. Remember an excellent meal there years ago. I recently stayed away and my room had the same bath. Thought it would be uncomfortable but it was heavenly. ( apart from the naff faux victorian claw feet! ) Also it was where it should be, in the, you know, BATHroom. No telly above it either. That’s just alarming.

I’ve stayed here a couple of times for events, and it’s been super handy for getting groups together without any fuss. If you’re sorting a trip for a team or friends, I found group accommodation melbourne cbd really convenient since the hotel has plenty of room types, solid conference spaces, and the lounge is a nice bonus for winding down after long days.

Since when has Melbourne been in the Yorkshire Dales or Peak District?

Any nice hotel recommendations not Grantley Hall as mega bucks and without a bath in the bedroom in front of the TV and with a king or super king bed.
