Mary King's Close. More authentic.

Camera obscura is very cool.

The Christmas markets this Saturday?! I hope you like crowds.

I second Mary Kings Close. How about the Royal Yacht Britannia?

Hop on hop off bus tour. Botanic Garden or Zoo light trail

If I was going to design a multi generational day out to Edinburgh that didn’t involve too much trekking about I’d do the following.
Morning - Edinburgh Castle/Camera Obscura and World of Illusion (all more or less on the same site ). World of Illusion is not cheap but worth every penny. Then walk down Victoria Street to get that Harry Potter vibe. Pop in to Mammas pizza or Petit Paris on the Grassmarket or Howies on Victoria St for lunch depending on food preferences/budget. If I had the afternoon free I’d then visit the Museum of Scotland (free!) and/or Mary Kings close. Looks like the weather is going to be bad unfortunately. Not been to the dungeons but I’m sure they’re brilliant and also close together everything else I mentioned. You def have to book slots at Mary Kings Close and World of Illusion and probably dungeons too so that’s something to bear in mind and be done online. All these things are fairly close together but if you’d prefer to go further afield and get your bearings The hop on hop off bus is excellent. Where are you staying?

DH and I went to the dungeons earlier this year and really enjoyed them. We also went up Arthur's seat but you may not have the right weather for that.

Thx all! Never heard of Mary Kings Close-is it better than the Dungeons? We've done the Castle & Camera Obscura before-though I'd do the Castle again!

Mary kings close is definitely better than the dungeons IMO, I’m not sure I’d take an 11yr old to the dungeons unless they’re not bothered by scary stuff.
going to the markets on a Saturday is suicidal unless you’re there as they open.
its forecast rain and heavy winds so check online as earlier in the week some attractions and the markets closed for safety reasons.
the national museum is good
