Spa type weekend break, 3 friends

3 of us late January, 1 or 2 nights. Originally thought of a spa break but can't find any with triple rooms, meaning leaving one of us alone. Alternatively, a nice town/city with things to do, restaurants etc. Ideally Midlands as two of us are from London with other friend up North. Will all be travelling by train. Was looking at Chester but struggling with accommodation.

Grateful for suggestions.

Thanks!

I regularly go away with my DM and DSiL. We get a family room with a double and 2 singles. You’d just need to decide who’s having the double. In our circumstances, it’s either the person celebrating the birthday but if there isn’t a birthday, we draw straws and the person in the double has to pay for the drinks!

which bit of "the north" is your friend in? You'd be best looking at where you can get trains to easily.
York is good a city break (but your friend might live there!), you could always get day passes to a hotel spa. Self catering apartments can be easier and cheaper than hotels if there's 3 of you, it's rare to find a hotel that accommodates 3 adults per room. (be cautious of booking a family room as they're usually 2 adults + children).

Liverpool? There’s two Radisson hotels in the city centre and you can book connecting rooms in both.

Depends what 'up North' means. Chester and Liverpool aren't in the midlands.

Assuming your friend is from 'properly up north', I'd be looking at Derbyshire, Notts, Lincs, or N Staffs, and checking how easy train travel would be. Buxton would be a good location IMO.

Chester is lovely but technically 'north'. Not sure how accessible Shropshire is by train but it's unspoilt and worth a visit.

It's that time of year - North Mids can get snow.

Agree with Buxton - spa crescent hotel is amazing.

Beware of 'close to the Peak District' - it will be the Stoke area. That doesn't mean it won't be good, it just doesn't sound good.

Liverpool is a wonderful city. It would be a shame not to explore.

Hoar Cross Hall ( near Burton-on-Trent), does triple rooms - I go with 2 friends and we have a triple room and an overnight stay. HTH
