Aberystwyth recommendations

We’ve booked a trip to Aberystwyth to round off the summer holidays. Two kids (6 and 3). I’d be very grateful for recommendations on activities and places to eat (self catering so I’d like at least a couple of meals off duty).

Oh I love Aberystwyth!

Can’t recommend anywhere really apart from the train that goes up the cliff at the end of the promenade area, I don’t know what’s up there apart from a view and cafe but it looks fun.

Fantasy Farm Park is lovely, with loads to do.

A few miles down the road is Borth, which has a gorgeous beach, with lifeguards. It also has a great cafe, The Sands as well as a couple of good pubs. The Victoria Inn is literally on the beach. If you're looking for a huge, reasonable Sunday lunch, The White Lion at Ral y Bont is great, but I would definitely recommend booking.

That should say Tal y Bont!

Thanks both. Cliff rail and Sunday lunch both firmly in my sights

I really like the National Library of Wales, which has free admission and is very kid-friendly. The museum in the middle of town is cool too. Lovely food at Baravin and Medina. There's a lovely park by the castle, and you can sit in the ruins while you eat your fish and chips! Best in town is the little chippy opposite the pier.

If you have a car, Aberaeron is nice (but very very touristy.) I'd go for the quieter Llannon beach (but pop into Aberaeron for ice cream!)

If you have seen the TV series Hinterland most of out was filmed in the area.
If you drive South New Quay and Aber Porth are both very different but lovely.
Now for something unusual near Aberporth is an Engineering type museum,

I love playing hide and seek around the castle with my children. We have a caravan in New Quay so we are most familiar with that area. But if you happen to be in that area (20 odd mins away) I can recommend The Lime Crab for chips, the ice cream parlour there for delicious ice cream and the newly opened The Watch House for lovely pizza with an amazing view of the sea.
