Is £230 enough spending money to go to Cornwall for 5 days?

MascalPascal · 14/02/2025 09:03

Going to Cornwall for Feb half term. Booked a lovely caravan which was very cheap owing it to it still being out of season. Going to St Ives.

Everything is booked and paid for, including all activities. Over the last 6 months i have been booking things slowly. Biggest expense really will be a food shop and petrol (I need to pay for return journey petrol from this money too).
Should that be enough?

The weather next week doesn't look that bad either xcweather.co.uk/forecast/st_ives. xcweather.co.uk/forecast/st_ives]] . Certainly Monday to Wednesday.

Go up to the island and see if you can spot some dolphins! There have been loads around this winter, even whales. And there are lots of seals.

This is why we go to Butlins, you pay for all your food and activities up front, so you only need money for petrol and the gift shop while you’re there.

It's better to save upfront than overpay for catered at Butlins. Also it really restricts your days because you have to plan them around food.

Another cheapish thing to do is take the train from st ives to st erth and back (it's only about three stops). Stunning scenery and should only be a few pounds.

Are you going to paradise park? (That's our favourite).

Make sure you go to Porthgwidden beach - the first time we went we only went to Porthminster (the big beach) as we didn't come across smaller Porthgwidden. Also you can get free tickets for the Tate gallery if you've not already.

Yep booked paradise park and the jungle barn after so she can run around a bit! Monday and Tues we're out all day, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday we'll be in surrounding areas but will get back to the caravan early evening so will eat there too.

Wanted to go to the beach too:)

Yes but I take a 'you only spend what you have' approach to everything including holidays.

BlackStrayCat · 14/02/2025 13:05

I think you are going to Carbis Bay! It[s fantasticwith a park in the sand for your DS and a fish and chip van (for one night) on site (not expensive butperfect and fresh) free activities in the evening and the most beautiful beach.

The on site shop is a rip off. Take shopping with you. For 5 days this is fine. x

Paradise Park is great!

BlackStrayCat · 14/02/2025 13:11

Agree, you sound like a fantastic mother! It will be great!

Salad666 · 14/02/2025 13:12

I think it sounds lovely and more than enough considering everything is booked and paid for and you're taking a good bit a food with you!

A few years ago we went to Iceland because we came into a bit of money, booked and paid for all activities but things happened and didn't have alot of spending money (Iceland is insanely expensive!) but we had taken some dry food with us, shopped at the local supermarket and still had one or two treats and plenty of souvenirs. More money doesn't mean better memories, sure we could have eaten out more or whatever but one of my favourite memories (apart from seeing the Northern Lights) was cuddling up with my husband with some packet noodles he made us, a nice hot drink and watching the heavy snow come down. It's the little things that make the happiest memories and I'm sure you and your DD will have a wonderful time!

ShrimpyJane · 14/02/2025 13:21

My holidays as a child were as you describe, we had a wonderful time. As an adult I have tried many holidays and all I can say is that spending more money on a holiday, activities food etc does not automatically make a better time.
Enjoy your time with your child and ignore all these silly posts about needing more.

Thank you. My budget is limited as I'm a single parent but I've saved what I can and DD is appreciative of these types of activities. The Eden project cost £50 alone for us both. I've found free craft sessions in the area. We're going to go crabbing too. I'm not deterred by the previously horrid comment about it being rubbish:)

Sounds like a fantastic trip you’ve got planned and I think £230 for 5 days is definitely doable with what you’ve already paid for. Have a fantastic time!

What I’m about to say isn’t relevant to you, OP as you’ve already bought your tickets (and it seems Eden Project don’t do refunds) but I wanted to share that for anyone out there that claims UC, you can get heavily discounted tickets for Eden Project and many more attractions across the UK. Definitely worth a look for those that do claim, and are planning trips/days out on a budget.

Whoever said £20 on fish and chips. Are you having a laugh?

When we were on holiday in North Wales last year it cost us £26.00 for 2 x Fish and chips, that was in the village chip shop near our holiday cottage. There were two shops and the other one was more expensive.

StMick · 14/02/2025 13:27

What a lovely mum you are. Have an amazing time, it all sounds perfect

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/02/2025 13:27

I'm overly invested in your holiday now op. Hope you have a wonderful time and let us know how it goes!

Sorry. Just me and my 7 year old going. Travelling from East of England to St Ives. Full tank of petrol already in car but will obviously fill up on way too. Everything is pre booked and paid for. Booked Eden project, paradise park, swimming, crafts, chocolate making... will bring packed lunches in the day when we're out and cook when we're in for the evenings which is 3 of the 5 nights.

This sounds SO lovely. You’ll both remember this lovely holiday for a long time I bet! Aw. I want to go!

AnotherDayinTime · 14/02/2025 13:42

Eat at the caravan, make sandwiches for when out, petrol not negotiable, stay local, not long crossings up and down into Devon and Wales as we do, it is doable; I can squeeze an attraction or even two. If you are members of the NT that will good

PlantDoctor · 14/02/2025 13:43

RosesAndHellebores · 14/02/2025 09:10

You have said the activities are paid for, so no spends on top of that?

As its for 5 days I'm assuming not a monumental drive so £60 whilst there and for getting home petrol wise.

£170 for food and treats. Say £70 at the supermarket, £20 on fish and chips, £40 on a burger type meal, £40 for incidentals - ice cream, ride on a funfair thingy.

Just to add it's £10 per adult portion of fish and chips at my local (in Cornwall) 😵

Edit: sorry just seen there's just two of you, so that's fine!

AnotherDayinTime · 14/02/2025 13:44

pack well with jackets and spends few of the days on the beach, fish and chips once, ice creams on few days, you will do it. Tight but doable. Jot it down and don't overspend.

KernowMaiden · 14/02/2025 13:54

Hayle has a Lidl and an Asda for your shopping. I think your biggest expense is likely to be fuel - the Eden Project is a bit of a trek from S’nives. The town itself is expensive, so budget for that. At the Harbour fish and chips it’s worth shelling out for Hake if you can but as it’s only two of you it won’t be too expensive. Take away rather than eat in!

you can spend £££ in St Ives but you don’t have to.

Wineaddict · 14/02/2025 13:55

OP - I don’t have anything to add, but it sounds like you have a lovely holiday planned for you and your little girl.
I loved caravan holidays in Cornwall as a child.
Please come back and let us know how it went when you get back.

Sunnyside4 · 14/02/2025 13:58

I'm sure petrol and food will be covered by that. It's mean to be nicer next week, so better for walks, and if you've got little ones you might manage a short time on the beach, all of which are free. Search online for free local activities. Take snacks and sandwiches/similar out with you and if you like a daily treat take all go back and have coffee and biscuits at the caravan. Take some games with you, so if it feels too cold to be out quite a bit of the day, you can go back and play them together.

Hope you have a lovely time.

SpareBoxRoomForEmergencies · 14/02/2025 13:59

No.

There we are. I am not interested in whether it has to cover the food and the petrol or whether you plan on eating out or whether there are three of you or ten or you. It's still no.

Some people are very sad.

Op please ignore the above poster, it sounds v well planned and I hope you have a wonderful time!

pimplebum · 14/02/2025 14:06

If you batch cook
if you think eating out is Mac Donald’s
if you use a water bottle everyday
if your kids never pester you for anything

personally I could spend £70 just on snacks and ice creams for the week

Trickedbyadoughnut · 14/02/2025 14:08

Gosh, I am impressed at your planning and gradually booking things so you're effectively paying in instalments - what a great idea, I can be bad at saving but this might help!

It sounds like a lovely holiday, hope you have a great time

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 14/02/2025 14:03

What a helpful response.

I got irritated by there being no relevant information that would help anyone answer the question even vaguely accurately. I've literally just seen that the OP did answer eventually, this morning, and I missed it.

And it's a single mum with one little girl so I feel a bit shit now for being so snippy and sarcastic. Sorry OP.

Given your update, I'd say it's enough. You can share a portion of fish and chips for a tenner or less and you don't need tons of money to have a nice time if the holiday park has some facilities on site. Self cater cheaply for your evening meal, make sandwiches to take out for the day and just have a few treats like ice creams or tea and cake in a nice tea shop. It doesn't need to be anything flashy. Just being away from home will be an adventure for her. Have a lovely time.
