Is £230 enough spending money to go to Cornwall for 5 days?

MascalPascal · 14/02/2025 09:03

Going to Cornwall for Feb half term. Booked a lovely caravan which was very cheap owing it to it still being out of season. Going to St Ives.

Everything is booked and paid for, including all activities. Over the last 6 months i have been booking things slowly. Biggest expense really will be a food shop and petrol (I need to pay for return journey petrol from this money too).
Should that be enough?

A picnic in Cornwall in February?

Absolutely, I live in Cornwall, there’s nothing like packing up a flask of hot chocolate and a sarnie, sitting overlooking a deserted beach.
The secret is wrap up warm, there’s nothing worse than being cold, you can make anything an adventure with a seven year old.
OP you’re not far from Godrevey, you could go and see the seals there, it is a NT car park though so you’d have to pay that.

I've already packed up a huge shopping bag of tea, biscuits, cereal, olive oil, herbs, pasta, sugar, cereal bars, crisps etc.. bringing all my cleaning stuff too like washing up liquid! I'm a caravan holiday pro as we regularly go on Haven holidays but this is the first time I've been Cornwall. I booked all the activities months ago as we're going out of season and nothing on park is open. I've booked a couple of Feb half term pantomimes too as we love pantos. I've done the best I can to give DD a lovely holiday and i know she'll love it. Crabbing is one of her favourite things to do! Xx

Just wanted to say how lovely your holiday sounds!! I know you’ll both have so much fun and it will definitely be one of the holidays she remembers for a long time.

I absolutely loved my caravan holidays as a child and I’m so happy my children are just becoming the age they’ll start to enjoy them too!

Pliudev · 15/02/2025 18:58

Warm sunshine but a cold wind here in Penwith today OP. Wrap up warm. Pasties are like internal central heating! I hope you have a wonderful time x
ps. Watch the cost of extras at Eden and avoid the shop if you can.

Cornwall is amazing. I’d spend every holiday there if I could. I’ve travelled the world but my best holiday ever was spent camping in Cornwall (Mevagissy/heligan).

The most expensive things are paid for, take a pack up when you go out then you’ll just have to buy an ice cream!

go to Asda/tesco later on and you can get cheap whoopsy items for the next day (we did this every day when camping).

you’re going to be making amazing memories with your daughter and you don’t need ££££ for that.

have a WONDERFUL time!

I would want that much per day for meals out and activities plus random spends for snacks, whatever the kids want.

@RubyRedBow

Do you just buy your kids whatever they want? And if so, why?

Lollipop81 · 15/02/2025 19:03

If you’re staying at the haven in Hayle there is a huge Asda and a Lidl for food. Plus there is a McDonald’s for a treat and there is a brewers fayre pub there with a soft play, which is really cheap if you have a day with not so much planned. Cornwall is beautiful you will not be disappointed. Sounds like you have planned it perfectly. Hope you have a fab time.

What a pointless (bordering on spiteful) post.
What you prefer to do is irrelevant to op.

@ExercicenformedeZ

what exactly are you buying to spend £230 a day when you go away?

I mean, how long is a piece of string? Drinks, shopping, theatre. I feel that my remarks have been taken somewhat out of context, plus OP has clarified that she is able to bring food from home, which does change things quite a bit. However, at first glance her budget seemed a bit scarily tight. I hope that she and her daughter have a lovely time.

Presumably because they can afford to do so? It's a holiday, a treat.

You can’t have thought it was news to anyone that some people take expensive holidays.
Making sure op knew you were one of them was utterly pointless, and nasty.

@ExercicenformedeZ

sure, but what if they want 10 ice creams and to blow £50 in the arcade?? Surely even on holiday there has to be limits and money is not endless!

You seem to have taken my post incredibly personally? The OP hasn't had a problem with it, you have!

And you sound as if you don't like to have a good time, and begrudge others having fun as well. FWIW I don't 'drink a lot of cocktails', I like the odd drink on holiday, and I don't stint myself on quality, either. I spend more on shopping than on booze anyway.

Nobody 'wants 10 ice creams'. Don't be daft. To be honest, the people who had a problem with my and others posts saying that we would find the OP's budget too restrictive sound skint and somewhat bitter.

MascalPascal · 15/02/2025 19:51

We've arrived in St Ives :) staying in Hayle.
I was pleasantly surprised how economical fuel consumption was on the motorway. I would've made it all the way here on a full tank easily but didn't chance it and popped in £20. Spent £35 in Tesco and have earmarked £50/60 for the return journey. Whatever is left is our spends and tbh I'm OK with it. I came here for quality time with DD. Everything is booked and paid for and we'll have a lovely time:))

SlightlyJaded · 15/02/2025 19:58

Great news. Have a brilliant holiday OP

@RubyRedBow I'd like that per hour - for... you know... whatever I fancied at any given moment. But hey ho - we cut our cloth and try not to make others feel 'less than'. Or at least most of us do....

ICanFeelItComingInTheAirTonight · 15/02/2025 19:59

Only just caught this thread, but a bit of advice- the petrol may be cheaper in Devon atm. I'm in North Cornwall, and the local BP garage is £1.40. If you're travelling home on a30, Whitehouse Services in Okehampton is £1.36(?). And obviously supermarkets petrol prices are generally cheaper. Hope you both have a great holiday, and managed to catch the sun this evening! Polzeath beach is nice, lots of rock pools, can park on the beach and has a cafe on the beach too. Also driving across Bodmin Moor and seeing the animals roaming is always exciting for the youngsters!

I'm not guessing how many in your party or other essential deets to work out how to answer your aibu.

JustMeAndTheFish · 15/02/2025 20:05

You will be fine. Yes St Ives is expensive but you have all the main things booked and paid for. Take as much as you can with you. Have a lovely time.
