Must visit places in the UK

We have visited lots of places in the UK over the years, but want to compile a list of places we haven't been to to make sure we do more. It could be for a day trip, a night, weekend, or longer if there there's an area we could explore.

I've already done lots of Google research, but I'd appreciate MN input as I can imagine there are places that others have visited and enjoyed that may not come up in various searches.

What we like (destination doesn't have to combine all of these, just at least one)
Beautiful scenery
Interesting towns/cities/sights
Walking opportunities (4-6 miles rather than full day hikes).

Evenings we like to have access to pubs/restaurants for food and drink. Don't need a club scene but happy with a lively town/city but equally happy with quiet villages as long we can eat!

Our camping days are over, so would need accommodation

2 adults only, no children.

Thank you

Castleton in the Peak District is so nice. Lovely circular walks and 4 nice pubs all in very close proximity. Loads of B&Bs.

There’s also a big show cave you can visit where you learn about r the rope weaving industry. Surprisingly fascinating!

Aberystwyth, coastal walk to Borth is about 6 miles, with a train back if you don’t fancy a further six.

The UK is full of interesting places

Isn't it just! I'm hoping this thread will help me find some I'm not aware of.

Thanks for the suggestions - we've been to some of the places mentioned and wholeheartedly agree - but lots of places we haven't been to.

Thank you and keep them coming!

Northumberland: beaches and castles, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh, Lindisfarne (Holy Island), Hadrians Wall.

North Berwick: lovely little town, walk east along the coast, take a boat trip to see the gannets and puffins on the islands. Easy train into Edinburgh, walk up Arthur’s Seat

Aldeburgh : lovely town, visit nearby places to walk on Dunwich Heath (spectacular when the heather is out) or funny little Walberswick , also Snape where there are walks across the marshes and through reeds.

N Norfolk Coast. Stay in Blakeney or Wells , walk sections of the Coast Path and get the excellent coast road bus service back. Cliff walk from Sheringham to Weybourne, or between Wells and Holkham a big circular walk along beach and dunes and back through lovely pinewoods.

Dorset: Beer, or Seatown, lovely cliff top walks and inland loops. Beer is a pretty little town with a fishing beach and great walks to the West, get the bus back.

Hebden Bridge, interesting town, walk up to Heptonstall, hard to believe such villages remain so unspoiled, across into the Pennine Way… any number of fantastic walks on the ‘tops’ straight out of the town or a short drive away.

Heysham village. Walk over the barrows, visit the Viking graves and St Peter's church. Miles of promenade to walk. Bare village for the evening/pubs

TheBunyip · 22/03/2024 09:41

The Marlborough Downs, the Ridgeway, Avebury, the Long Barrow and Silbury Hill, white horses, Savernake Forest. It's a beautiful and interesting part of the country.

Stay in Marlbs itself, either at the Premier Inn, the Castle & Ball or an air bnb, lots of lovely places to eat: Dan's, Pino's (Italian), two great tapas places, the Funghi Club (French), Franklyn's (also French but sort of rustic bistro), Bunces or the Food Gallery or Krumbz for lunch (not the Polly, never the Polly - awful). lots of boujee (and charity) shops for a nice mooch. Fabulous independent record (Sound Knowledge) and book shops (the White Horse)

A beautiful, tranquil and peaceful spot with the highest sea cliffs in England - 'The Valley Of The Rocks' at Lynton in North Devon. A short step from Lynmouth for pubs and eating places. My favourite place in the whole world!

RunnerDown · 22/03/2024 10:24

Stein in Waternish in Skye.

Findhorn village in Moray.

The Isle of Harris to see the most amazing beaches. Stay in/ near Tarbert. Facilities not so great but worth it for the natural beauty.

Port Charlotte in Islay.

Kippford in Dumfries and Galloway

Riverlee · 22/03/2024 10:26

Glencoe in Scotland - stunning

Salcombe

Babyroobs · 22/03/2024 10:30

Place marking.

ImDuranDuran · 22/03/2024 12:41

Have you been to Port Isaac? If not I'd highly recommend (off-peak season jf possible!)

We went last year as a family of 4 but I think it would have been perfect for 2 adults, whether as a day-trip or for a couple of nights.

Small but beautiful. Plenty of places to eat and drink over a couple of days and some beautiful coastal walks.

GreatWorldAtlas · 22/03/2024 12:47

The Moray Coast - Findhorn, Roseisle, Elgin, Forres, Nairn. Astonishing place and beaches.

Also Northumberland:

Rolling valleys
Scenic hill walks
Quaint towns

ShrubRose · 22/03/2024 13:19

Two NT places (among many)
Coleton Fishacre (Devon)
Dudmaston (Shropshire)

IggyAce · 22/03/2024 13:27

Murker to Keld circular walk is stunning.

Hike up Fleetwith pike from honister pass.

Northumberland is stunning, there are loads of places to visit and walks, you could do several visits.

I Love Cragside it’s one of my favourite National Trust properties.
