Is a week long enough at Great Yarmouth

Hi
I’m looking to book a holiday for my family for august , (2 adults , 2 children ) we have to take our little dog too so looking at caravan at seashore haven in Great Yarmouth, this is august and a week is just under £1300 , was going to go for 10 nights but it’s just under 2k so too much really.
I just am wondering if it’s possible to get everything done in a week I haven’t booked yet but it says check in could be as late as 5pm so unsure what would do until then as abit cautious to leave all our suitcases etc in the car. We will be arriving early around 10 am latest . We would want to do the usual seaside activities and go to Hemsby etc for a day , do you think a week is long enough ? We have our little dog so finding pet friendly accommodation has been a pain. Vauxhall park dean comes up cheaper but I’ve heard bad reviews from there and I also believe it’s quite a long walk from everything as the plan is to leave the car by the caravan most days and use land train / bus from haven if we do book there. Any advice welcome

It's not snobbery to call a rundown seaside town a rundown seaside town when there are much nicer places not far away. It's just what it is!

It absolutely is snobbery. I've been to lots of the places mentioned on here. My kids preferred GY hands down.

Ilovemyshed · 23/01/2024 18:29

Way too long!

mummysquasher · 23/01/2024 18:33

Another vote for the Time and Tide museum. Fascinating place and helps you to understand why Great Yarmouth has seen better days. We did 3 days there a couple of years ago, me 8 yr old DS and my mum. I remember negotiating with DS that we'd to just do 30 mins in the museum then go back to the arcades. But there was so much to see, interactive exhibits etc he was so engaged that we were there for over two hours !

Please don't go to Great Yarmouth for a week. I went for a day on a University Geography trip for a case study on levels of deprivation.

What a country we live in eh?

We spent a week in a park dean holiday park just outside Great Yarmouth last summer and honestly had a great time. Didn’t really venture into the high street but spent loads of time on the beach front. There was loads to do especially for kids. Circus was brilliant and would highly recommend. Also a fair few attractions within easy driving distance if you fancy a day further out.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 23/01/2024 18:45

Great Yarmouth used to be our go to resort when I grew up in landlocked Cambridgeshire!

North Norfolk is much nicer imo but if you go with realistic expectations, I’m sure you’ll have a lovely week.

Bobbybobbins · 23/01/2024 18:46

The beach is lovely. The town not so much. Fun for a day or two!

asterel · 23/01/2024 18:46

I always say GY is like Blackpool without the charm 😂 Lots of places along the coast though OP to visit the less busy beaches, and the Broads inland.

I’ve stayed in nice cottages in Southwold and Cromer in August for less than that per week! It’s alarming how even quite ordinary U.K. holiday places are being price gouged these days.

idontlikealdi · 23/01/2024 19:32

It's about six days too long, sorry op!

We have done some lovely boat trips on the Broads, lasted about an hour in GY.

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 23/01/2024 19:36

North Norfolk is much nicer and the area is very dog friendly.

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 23/01/2024 19:41

Just to echo that anything longer than about 90mins is too long.

ShowOfHands · 23/01/2024 19:46

If you go with the right attitude, you'll be fine. It's deprived because it has lost its identity in the same way as lots of seaside towns. Lots of disenfranchised youth, drugs and poverty. You can't escape that. But it's rather beautiful if you look at the architecture and history. With small children, there's a lot to entertain them. You have to embrace it though. It's very kiss me quick. You can go to the hippodrome and the pleasure beach, go and see rock being made, donkey rides etc. Do a couple of days elsewhere as well. Bewilderwood is always recommended here (I'm the only person who dislikes it).

Trouble with Norfolk is the exceedingly middle class and gentrified North Norfolk coast, full of second home owners with their black labs, Range Rovers and this season's Seasalt. They like to bray loudly across the Hoste in Burnham, usually about Jonty summering in the Dordogne.

For the record, the above reverse snobbery is deliberate. Norfolk is a county of two sides and as much as I hate it, it's a class issue too. Personally, I see a lot of joy in both sides having lived here for 4 decades. You just need to embrace it.

We stayed at that Haven OP and had a good time- the pool is good and nice walks along the beach. Gorleston is lovely, and the cinema in GY was handy on a rainy day. Kids also loved the mini golf on the sea front.

MinnieCauldwell · 23/01/2024 19:52

Sheringham has a real familiy feel, great beache and steam trains

whereareyousleep · 23/01/2024 19:53

Definitely go to bewilderwood while you're there my 2 DS's loved it.

orangetriangle · 23/01/2024 19:57

can really recommend Wells next the sea for a great family holiday

RedRosie · 23/01/2024 20:10

We had a sort of family gathering at GY a few years ago, although staying in a great hotel (Imperial Hotel) rather than one of the parks. I hope it's still there as it was super friendly with a fantastic breakfast. Four days.

It's not posh but actually we had a great time. Threw ourselves into crazy golf, amusements, model village etc. Good beaches. We also did some day trips up and down the coast, and did some boating on The Broads. Good value for eating out. We were mostly grown ups, but it was full of kids having fun. I hope you have a brilliant holiday.

NewYearOldMe2024 · 23/01/2024 20:12

It's the mobility scooter centre of the world.

The little funfair on the seafront though is fab. Pay once, do a zillion rides and finish off with fish and chips that you will share with a seagull.

patsy8005 · 23/01/2024 20:18

I think Yarmouth is fine for a day or two my kids enjoyed the funfair and the circus was great.

We stayed at Wild Duck so can't comment on the haven site but I know people who have stayed there and enjoy it.

From there if you have a car there's lot in reach Gorleston beach is lovely and we drove to wroxham and hired a boat for the day. Also bewilderwood is great fun but not sure if that is dog friendly

Copperas · 23/01/2024 20:19

It has the most amazing medieval city walls with 13? towers

This made me think of that South Park where Cartman gets a rascal with "tip assist" 😂

Very G Yarmouth.

Fulshaw · 23/01/2024 20:27

Laughing at the idea you should take kids to North Norfolk instead. What the fuck is there for kids to do up there?! GY beats it hands down if you have kids.

Princessfluffy · 23/01/2024 20:31

Norfolk is a wonderful choice for a holiday, there is so much to do.

Don't miss the Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth it's fantastic.

Try Horsey in Norfolk or somewhere close by - the seals are amazing, the sunrises are beautiful and you can still go to GY if you fancy it...

Edited

Horsey is amazing for seals November to March, otherwise it's all from afar and the sand banks on the Noryh coast are a better bet in August

HeddaGarbled · 23/01/2024 23:39

The beach is lovely

The beach would indeed be lovely if it wasn’t liberally scattered with cigarette ends.
