Is a week long enough at Great Yarmouth

Hi
I’m looking to book a holiday for my family for august , (2 adults , 2 children ) we have to take our little dog too so looking at caravan at seashore haven in Great Yarmouth, this is august and a week is just under £1300 , was going to go for 10 nights but it’s just under 2k so too much really.
I just am wondering if it’s possible to get everything done in a week I haven’t booked yet but it says check in could be as late as 5pm so unsure what would do until then as abit cautious to leave all our suitcases etc in the car. We will be arriving early around 10 am latest . We would want to do the usual seaside activities and go to Hemsby etc for a day , do you think a week is long enough ? We have our little dog so finding pet friendly accommodation has been a pain. Vauxhall park dean comes up cheaper but I’ve heard bad reviews from there and I also believe it’s quite a long walk from everything as the plan is to leave the car by the caravan most days and use land train / bus from haven if we do book there. Any advice welcome

1 day is too long in Gt Yarmouth.

Unless you love vape shops, litter, and punch ups outside pubs!

Goawaytina · 23/01/2024 14:41

Probably too long 😂

noooooooo · 23/01/2024 14:49

Only been once at the end of a Broads boating holiday, but it’s quite a rundown town, although I’m sure it has some nice parts and we just didn’t see them. Honestly, a week seems a long time. Would you fancy boating? Good for dogs, ours loved it. You can get a week in July, under £1000, for two adults, two children and a pet.

It depends what kind of thing you like doing. There are lots of amusements at Great Yarmouth but North Norfolk has nicer beaches imo. And you can drive out to Yarmouth or Hemsby for a day or two. North Norfolk has better beaches, crabbing, boat rides etc which your DC may enjoy. For a good value break I'd go for the park Dean site at Hunstanton , Manor Park, which is very clean and has a little pool in case it's too cold for the sea. It's easy walking to the beach and fairground and sealift centre.
If your heart is set on East Coadt then I'm sure a week will be fine. Have a great time.

Coastalchick23 · 23/01/2024 15:29

Oh goodness. Well I plan to spend a day in Hemsby and local areas , going to continue to look as very expensive booking direct with haven , seashore seems like a good location though

We had a week in Cornwall in a posh hotel right next to the sea for that money! I realise you have a dog so can't do that, but there are caravan sites there too and it's like being abroad in the summer. I'm not too far from Great Yarmouth and would never go there unless I really had to for some reason. There's really not much there and is very rundown. If it really has to be Norfolk I would go to Sheringham or Cromer instead. Kelling Heath is a lovely family friendly site near Sheringham with a swimming pool, club house etc. It's surrounded by heathland and forest and there's a stop where you can catch the full size steam train.

I second this. An awful place.

HedgehogB · 23/01/2024 15:50

I was born close to here . A day is too long it’s a bit of a dump. I am saying that as a Norfolk dumpling through and through . The beach at Gorleston is nice. Go to North Norfolk.

Alwaysthesunandthemoon · 23/01/2024 15:55

I have been to Haven Seashore and the site is fine. I've also been to Haven Caisterm which I prefer. You can easily get a bus into Yarmouth form Caister.
Yarmouth is good with small children as it still has all the old fashioned seaside stuff, including a pier with amusements, donkey rides, bouncy castle, roller blading rink, model village. My kids loved it. It's a few years since I've been so some activities may have gone.
A trip on the broads is good and Pleasurewood Hills theme park is not far.

jimbojambo · 23/01/2024 15:56

Sad to say that I agree that GY is pretty grim. It's ok for a day, but that's it.
And yes the Vauxhall Holiday park is awful. We camped there for a couple of nights on our way back from north Norfolk. Never again!
North Norfolk is beautiful. We've been to Kelling Heath nr Sherringham a few times. It's a really lovely holiday park. We've camped but they have lovely looking cabins. No idea how much they cost to stay in, though.

An hour is too long

LadyKenya · 23/01/2024 16:02

I went years ago, and stayed on a Haven park caravan site. I left after two days. To be honest the weather was shocking ( just my luck). The beach was gorgeous, but the town center was pretty run down. I had the best cockles I have ever eaten there, so it's all right!

loml97 · 23/01/2024 16:06

Look at Winterton on sea, only 20 mins up from GY. It is my favourite beach, wide and with sand dunes, perfect for dog walking. There are cottages and chalets. Hemsby is a 10 minute drive.

MrsMariaReynolds · 23/01/2024 16:07

This thread makes me laugh. DH and I live in Norwich and from time to time love to drive out to Yarmouth to enjoy what we call "a slice" (of life). There's a few nice bits but most of it really is grim. And we're always quick to get out of town by sundown.

Fulshaw · 23/01/2024 16:11

Vauxhall is out of town so if you don’t want to take your car every day then Seashore is better. 2 days will be long enough for everything that’s within walking distance ie the seafront and town centre. Recommend the Hippodrome!

Rest of the time will be day trips out of Yarmouth and there’s plenty of options for those.

Spirallingdownwards · 23/01/2024 16:23

Haven at Caister is a dump too. I can't believe anyone is recommending it.

Theraffarian · 23/01/2024 16:25

We stay in Pakefield , half an hour away from GY , but plenty of little cottages ( including dog friendly) 5 minutes walk from the beach . Easy walk along the front to Lowestoft if you want . I remember GY as quite nice about 20 years ago , by my husband insists it’s not changed and was the same then as it is now . I’m just a tourist to the area though , so I’m sure there are nice parts , just the town centre isn’t the best .

Mistymornin · 23/01/2024 16:30

It's bleak. Stayed one night (cannot remember where) then returned home 😬

WolvesDiscoandBoogaloo · 23/01/2024 16:30

My son had a lot of fun there when we went on a day trip. I think he'd have been bored with a longer stay.

We stayed in Norwich and did activities around there, Wells, Hunstanton, Cromer, and Great Yarmouth. I'd definitely recommend a week with those. GY and Hunstanton are both great for children, with the other two being nicer for adults.

Roselilly36 · 23/01/2024 16:31

Don’t listen to the snobs, Gt Yarmouth is fabulous for a family holiday, so much to see and do at sensible prices. Model village is fantastic value, family ticket was £38 this year, and you could use the ticket for the whole week. Hippodrome Water Circus is amazing. New Marina gym and pool complex. Ten pin bowling. The Pier. You can visit the Broads, Wroxham, Hemsby, Norwich city centre easily. We visit Gt Yarmouth regularly and have never witnessed any trouble. Eating out is good value.

TempleOfBloom · 23/01/2024 16:33

Can you get a caravan or chalet in Sheringham, Runton, Cromer or Beeston Regis? Lots of chalet and caravan sites, not holiday parks as such, but Sheringham is lovely.

inquisitiveinga · 23/01/2024 16:35

Please don't go to Great Yarmouth for a week. I went for a day on a University Geography trip for a case study on levels of deprivation.

Try Horsey in Norfolk or somewhere close by - the seals are amazing, the sunrises are beautiful and you can still go to GY if you fancy it...

OpalOrchid · 23/01/2024 16:39

There's loads to do in Gt Yarmouth. Don't listen to the delicate little snobs on here.

Roselilly36 · 23/01/2024 16:41

Don’t miss a visit to Great Yarmouth Minister, so much history, documentary in there. Well worth a visit.
