Hotel or B&B Winchester

We are currently looking at university visits with DD and plan to add Winchester and Southampton to our list. As we don't know either towns we thought we go for a weekend and have a look around before doing the official Open Day visits.

Can anyone recommend a decent place to stay? We do need two rooms and compared to other places it feels like Winchester is really expensive. Even the Premier Inn quoted nearly £300 for a one-night-stay end of April.

Are you driving or using public transport?

Driving.

Winchester does tend to be expensive as it is a year round tourist destination. The cheapest place is probably the Travel Lodge it’s central but doesn’t have parking so that does add to the cost. The reviews aren’t great either. I think I would stay in Southampton and visit Winchester for the day. It’s only a short drive on the M3 between the two and it has a lot more budget options.

Yes, you only need one place to stay for both. However I’m not seeing many places I’d be confident in recommending for much less that £265 for the two rooms. There are cheaper options there which might be fine.

Also look at Eastleigh.

Basingstoke has cheaper options but it’s north of Winchester so more of a drive to Southampton.

Thanks. We had a re-think and will do only the Open days.

Winchester can be done as a day trip, long but doeable and then Southampton separately.
