ULEZ charge, how does it work?

I'm sure I should of received a charge on 3 separate occasions. Does it just arrive in the post? Or do I have to do something?

darkh · 12/11/2023 22:27

I've received nothing at all.

How long ago did you travel? Is your car compliant?

StrictlyJowita · 12/11/2023 22:48

What do you mean receive a charge? A fine?

Specialguardianshiporderchild · 13/11/2023 00:49

Yes, a fine if you don't pay within 3 days. If you've subscribed to autopap, you'll be charged once a month.

darkh · 13/11/2023 07:55

I haven't subscribed to anything. I received a letter months ago saying that my car would be part of this. I've traveled in the zones within the last 5 weeks a few times and will do agin this week. I thought I'd get a letter afterwards but nothing has come.

It won’t come immediately, but if you’ve not paid the charge you can expect fines to come in the post at some point

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/11/2023 08:08

You should go online and pay the charge

LIZS · 13/11/2023 08:39

You can check your car online to see if it is chargeable. Then you pay the fee as you drive in the zone.

Seeline · 13/11/2023 08:54

If you drive in the ULEZ area regularly and your car is not compliant, I would set up the auto pay system via the Tfl website. The charge will be taken automatically if you enter the zone. That way you don't have to remember to pay, and risk getting fines because you haven't paid.

Are you sure your car is non-compliant? Check on the TfL website whether you need to pay in the first place.

Paying the ULEZ charge

The official way to pay the ULEZ daily charge. Pay online, over the phone or via the app. Or set up Auto Pay to pay charges automatically each month.

You won't get a letter to pay the charge - you are expected to do that within 3 days of entering the zone. Any letters will be fines for not paying the charge.

Enderunicorn · 13/11/2023 08:57

The letter comes only if you haven't paid. Like the congestion charge/dartford crossing etc you are expected to take care of paying the charge. No one will contact you unless you fail to pay and are being fined.

CheersToMe · 13/11/2023 08:59

TfL do not contact you, you have to go online and pay the charge within 3 days.

You may get a fine through the post shortly, if the cameras tracked your vehicle and you haven't made a payment.

Going forward, set up autopay as suggested, and it will take the charge automatically, which saves you having to remember to pay.
I've done this as we regularly skirt around the edges of ULEZ in non-compliant vehicles, and it's not always obvious where the zone starts.

Razorcroft · 13/11/2023 09:03

I think you have really misunderstood how it works.

You need to pay the charge, by going on the TfL website or a third party app like Caura. It’s on you. You can also set up autopay on the website so if you drive through the zone you’ll automatically pay the charge.

If you have driven in the ULEZ zone and paid no charge, then be prepared for fines to come through the post and you have zero recourse to fight them. one fine is 90 quid if paid within the fortnight!!

3Tunes · 13/11/2023 09:08

OP This is the website you need (don’t get scammed by the unofficial ones that come up on Google). You will need to create an account, register your car, then set up auto pay for the future. It’s a pain of a website, so set aside a good hour to get it sorted.

For the times you’ve already driven, I suspect there is no way out but to pay the fines. But it would be worth calling TfL’s helpline to see exactly what you owe and how to pay it. It’s 03432222222.

You are required to go online and pay by yourself within 2 days
(eg on the link given by @Specialguardianshiporderchild you could pay for visits from Saturday 11th)

You would now be liable for the excess charges on your older visits

You can find out the status of any fines due by contacting : [email protected]

You can opt to ‘challenge’ the fines but I don’t know how lenient they would be for not understanding the process

I would recommend setting up AutoPay, as with that you get a monthly bill whenever it becomes due. I only occasionally drive in to London and I went in on the weekend just before zones were expanding, I wasn’t sure which of my destinations were chargeable so used auto pay - and ended up paying for just the Friday & Saturday rather than the Sunday as well (Sunday would have been chargeable a week later)

Maybe the cameras where you go are not working so it isn’t picked you up if it’s been 5 weeks and you haven’t had a charge?

Seeline · 13/11/2023 09:16

Are you absolutely sure that your vehicle isn't compliant? Only non-compliant vehicles have to pay the charge.

I got a letter saying my car was included in this. It's diesel and old.

OP posts:
Seeline · 13/11/2023 21:59

Is it older than 2015?

darkh · 13/11/2023 23:12

It's a 62 plate

OP posts:
Seeline · 14/11/2023 08:43

Ok - so probably non-compliant. Sounds as though you're going to get several fines in the post then if you were caught by the cameras
For future trips, I really would recommend setting up an auto pay account on the TfL website to pay the £12.50/day charge then you won't need to worry about getting fined.
