I know there are some fabulous mumsnetters who live in/know this neck of the woods so looking for an idea of places to eat and things to do. Happy to travel up to 60 mins in the car, but closer to this area the better. Will have a 3 year old in tow!

Cream o Galloway if it's reopened. Lush ice cream.

We were there this year.
For a start, there's a lovely Italian in Castle Douglas - Carlos. Nice food and not too fancy.
We enjoyed Caerlaverock Castle. Plus, if you follow a short footpath from there you come to a lovely coastal walk, with bird hides.
The Boathouse at Glencaple does good food with great views

Go to the beach! There's all sorts from nice sandy ones such as Dhoon beach (Kirkcudbright), Carrick and Sandgreen to ones like Rockcliffe and Kippford waterfront which are shells and rocks. Ross bay had the biggest hairy crabs I've ever seen....

In fact Kippford to Rockcliffe is a lovely walk.

The Raiders Road forest drive has lovely walks, picnic spots and amazing views.

Kirkcudbright is worth a wander - it's a lovely wee town, with some great streets, park and cafe to go to.

If you fancy a challenge there's some great small hills to go up too - Screel on a clear day is a brilliant view to the Isle of Man.

I second that the walk from Rockcliffe to Kippford is really lovely. And it’s nice to stop at The Anchor in Kippford for food.
Designs cafe in Castle Douglas does nice lunches and the Greek restaurant on the High Street is good too.
You can watch a starling murmuration from the bird hide at RSPB at Mersehead. About 4-4.30 . It’s amazing to see but might involve too much waiting about for a wee one.
Sandyhills beach is nice. There’s a great walk to a quiet beach called White Port - you have to walk to the second beach though- the first one is not as pretty

White Port Beach

A walk through beautiful woodland to a sandy beach ideal for swimming.

We went a few years back and went on seaways at Laggan outdoors. Beautiful views and the instructor was fab.
