Business Class

Just spent a few weeks backpacking around Japan (turns out I'm even less of a traveller than I first thought) and had the news the rental property I'm selling will be completed next week so treated myself to a business class upgrade on my way home...

Never flown business class before, nobody I know ever flies business class, and I don't know what to expect. I feel like I'm going to look like a scruffy chav! Any tips?

I don't know if it's because I feel like im genuinely looking rough after weeks away from my usual salon appointments (trying to get a curly blow dry in Japan = disaster) or if I'm just feeling down about myself due to the way I've been treated over here (im about as ugly as you can get in terms of Japan standards) but I don't want to show myself up.

They are providing a service that you are paying for, you can't show yourself up.
That said be clean. That really is all I can think of.
Don't go into the bathroom with bare feet, although you will get given sleep socks.
Enjoy the experience.

You'll arrive at the same time as economy in the same plane. The huge amount of money is supposed to make you feel good, not bad. You see all sorts in business. Or at least it looks like it as I bugger off to economy.

Just enjoy it! I'd say to turn up clear/vaguely presentable and job done.
Otherwise relax and enjoy whatever is on offer during the flight!

We always fly business and just look like a regular family. I wear my normal clothes, I’m not glamorous or Into fashion. Truly there are all sorts there just enjoy it. You have the same right to be there as everyone else.

Jelllytot · 22/10/2023 02:14

Just curious, can you define what "ugly by Japanese standards" are?

Do you mind me asking what your jobs are? I am so fascinated when those who fly business aren't flying with work! I'm on maternity leave and so ready for a career switch!

Having chatted to our tour guide, the definition of beauty in Japan is -

Taller than average
Long straight dark hair
Dark sparkly eyes
Skinny with no curves/boobs
As pale as possible

Me -

5'2" (the place I'm average height is Japan!)
Wild curly blonde hair
Blue eyes
An hourglass 32DD
A year round tan

@DontBeBitterGlitter2023 as a pp said clean comfortable clothes, given the length of the flight.

Get to the airport early and go to the lounge - food and drink are free. You will be pleasantly surprised when you see the range of people travelling.

You often board first after passengers with mobility assistance. In my experience you get offered a drink as you settle in. The crew are lovely and you do feel special - I’ve only flown business a couple of times.

To put your mind at rest go on YouTube and search for your airline and business class. You will see they often are in jeans or leggings. It also gives you an idea what to expect.

Oh you're going to enjoy your trip home!
You don't need to wear anything special, wear something comfy.
I flew business class with BA to Thailand and back, enjoyed every minute of it.
I wore jogging bottoms and a t-shirt, albeit smartish "girly" type joggers and trainers (sliders on the way back)
Some people were dressed like me, some in shorts and t-shirts, some in dresses, some in jeans.
Your seat will recline into a bed so I'd definitely wear comfy clothes, the stewards will not judge you on your clothes.
We got champagne upon boarding served in a proper glass, water also served in a glass.
Food was fab and after the service they have fridges of drinks, snacks and sandwiches which you can help yourself to.
I also loved the little wash bag they give you, socks, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, eye mask.
You're also given a big bag with bedding, absolute bliss to recline your seat, wrapped in a blanket watching a movie.
Definitely take advantage of the business class lounge at the airport, food and drink is free and you'll be sat in comfort.
Enjoy your trip home

Have a look on you tube at your airlines business class. That will give you an idea on what to expect. Use the lounge so arrive early. Basically enjoy it. It’s a great experience. Who are you flying with?

YaWeeFurryBastard · 22/10/2023 08:06

We always fly business and I just wear loose trousers and a t shirt/cardigan sort of a boho yoga look and DH just wears jeans and a smart t shirt, he takes comfy joggers to change into either in the lounge or on the plane. Worth taking a change of clothes in hand luggage if you have a connection as I often have a shower and freshen up in the lounge before the next flight.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 22/10/2023 08:09

Of course you won’t show yourself up! Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, literally no one cares what you are wearing. Also, wear something that is easy to change out of if you are flying with an airline that give you pjs. Taking off with your feet up and a glass of fizz in hand is great!! You will have a lovely time 🥰

Torganer · 22/10/2023 08:17

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I have never looked at what fellow passengers are wearing. I just wear normal clothes. Last time my husband was covered in sick as the baby threw up everywhere!

DontBeBitterGlitter2023 · 23/10/2023 02:00

Thanks everyone really appreciate it. I think my imposter syndrome got in the way a bit! (Story of my life)

It's weird as I've been to some really fabulous high end places around the world but always pride myself on appearance and being well groomed... but after 3 weeks of travelling in hostels I'm just not 🤣 I did manage to get a blow dry yesterday though 🤣

Flying with emirates and they have showers in their lounge but I wanted to shower/change before check in as I'll have been walking around all day, there are showers at the other airport terminal so I'll stop by there first

Honestly I'm a right scruffy person and have never had a problem with traveling bc.

Just enjoy it.

novocaine4thesoul · 23/10/2023 02:31

They will not give a damn, and nor should you. Unless you are going to be particularly weird or demanding on the flight, then all is fine.
