I'd like to visit the Yorkshire Dales - I've never been.

I'm 62 and have never been to Wales! We are rectifying this next week with 3 days in a cute AirBNB in Porthmadog. DH booked it as it's near Portmerrion which I said I would like to see.

We tried to go to Portmeirion this week . We got there to find we couldn't due to having our dogs with us ! It never crossed my mind it was somewhere you had to pay to go to like a visitor attraction ( like Clovelley in Devon I guess). Anyway just warning you in case you have a dog !!

Ha, loving all the M25 love compared to roads up north we are quite happy with! We like to keep costs down so NT and EH places plus churches are on the list for Kent plus the coast of course but worried that Dover/Felixstowe and Ashford will be busy to negotiate as we like to try and keep off motorways.

I live up north and prefer M25 to a lot of other motorways.

Roystonv · 15/10/2023 13:12

Oh good we base our fears on all the traffic reports saying bits are closed or long delays! I suppose late morning and early afternoon are the best times to hit it?

Kweenbee · 15/10/2023 13:37

Norfolk and Suffolk and the bits of Scotland I've not seen.

Kweenbee · 15/10/2023 13:46

I'm always torn when people recommend Northumberland. On the one hand I want people to love this amazing undersung EMPTY county with fabulous castles and coastline and gloriously friendly folk and hearty fresh food but on the other hand I selfishly want to keep it just for me... I grew up in Newcastle and I still laugh at the memory of a trip to Bamburgh where my friend said, in all seriousness, that the beach was getting crowded. There were around six people on it (this was a long time ago).

Visit if you must, southern/western people but be prepared to possibly not want to go back to the overcrowded south....

ah you have a great selection of NT & EH places in Kent. Re M25 - Tricky to say when best time is? Pre pandemic you could be sure of rush hour but it’s weirder these days. Whatever you do avoid Fridays from about 12pm onwards and Sundays in general. I travel on it a few times a week and rarely get caught up in anything.

Rewindthefilm · 15/10/2023 13:49

South Wales for me, and more of the Highlands.

Roystonv · 15/10/2023 14:03

Thanks to everyone for Kent/M25 tips🙂

ByTheSea · 15/10/2023 14:48

The Scottish Highlands and my friend said Ironbridge in Shropshire is nice so I hanker for that too

Bovrilla · 15/10/2023 14:53

RaraRachael · 15/10/2023 10:44

It is. We holidayed there most years when the kids were little and loved all the little villages in the surrounding areas.
The only downside was that there tended to be a lot of kids from these "language schools" in the town in the height of summer and we found a lot of them rude, like ten of them sitting round a table in a coffee shop with one milkshake and generally barging their way everywhere.

Yep, I live in one of those villages nearby.

Stratford is lovely, pretty and enough to do for a weekend of Shakespeare related visiting.

And Warwick (castle) just up the road too, and if you've a car it's under 30 minutes to the north Cotswolds from Stratford.

One corner I haven't explored is Norfolk. Must go. And haven't been for a proper foliday in Devon since I was a child. Always seem to drive through it to Cornwall. Might need to swap one year and do Devon for a holiday.

RaraRachael · 15/10/2023 14:56

Lucky you @Bovrilla . I'm very envious.
Unfortunately our friends have just moved away from Stratford so we won't be visiting much now.
They felt it was getting too touristy

Icequeen01 · 15/10/2023 15:16

@Babyroobs Thanks for the tip. Luckily we don't have a dog. I agree it does seem odd to have to pay to visit. You just reminded me I think you can book online which makes it slightly cheaper. Off to check nowSmile

Bovrilla · 15/10/2023 15:19

I have to admit it's very touristy and since loads of the shops closed like Debenhams etc the town centre has little in it for locals.

End up driving to Leamington or train into Brum for shopping now

CrushingOnRubies · 15/10/2023 16:14

Norfolk

From where I live it's a very awkward part of the country to get to

Azaeleasinbloom · 15/10/2023 16:41

stargirl1701 · 14/10/2023 21:50

Cornwall.

We are in Highland Perthshire and it is so far away.

Star girl, having driven to Cornwall from Aberdeenshire, I can confirm it is a very long way. You get to Bristol and realise there’s still a long way to go. It looks so little on the map 🙄

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/10/2023 16:58

The Isle of Man
It's always fascinated me, that it's near enough but has its own laws

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/10/2023 17:00

Actually IOM is of course not part of the UK, so I'll say the Isle of Skye

Twigletgirl27 · 15/10/2023 17:13

@Kweenbee I know exactly what you mean. I live in a popular village in Northumberland. Whenever there's a travel programme on tv telling everyone how beautiful it is here I want to tell them to shut up, don't tell everyone! My husband was born 'down south' and has absolutely no desire to return. It really is beautiful and peaceful

emmetgirl · 15/10/2023 19:04

One of the few parts of the UK I've never been to is the north east, Northumberland. It looks lovely around the coast up there and I'm definitely going to visit before too long.
I'm lucky enough to live in Cornwall (not from here though) and my favourite other places are the Lake District and Scotland.
Lots of family in Ireland too so I've been to many places there and visit regularly.

VisitorfromAbroad2 · 24/10/2023 19:40

I've been to lots of places, but these are still on my list

St Kilda
Scilly Isles
Shetland
Orkney
Somewhere with puffins, I keep missing them at various places

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/04/2024 15:05

@RaraRachael , all the language school
kids can be a nightmare in central Oxford, too - e.g. hordes of them blocking the pavement and failing to move when they can see you’re trying to get a pushchair through.😡

reluctantbrit · 15/04/2024 07:26

Northumbria
York/Yorkshire, one visit isn't enough
Jersey
Skara Brae

Havent done the east coast further up than Suffolk. Been to Lincoln which was lovely but would like to go to Norfolk and to Newcastle.

Exactly the same!
In fact I went to seeLincoln based on a thread on here I think.

Never been to Newcastle so that's on my list.
