Hi everyone, currently taking a 2 night break in a holiday cottage with DH and DS.

We arrived yesterday and everything seemed fine. It's marketed as a 'luxury cottage' and I feel we've paid quite a lot for it in comparison to others I've seen.

There's a litany of minor annoyances and problems.

  1. an enormous spider ambled across the floor last night, followed by numerous flies. DH went to the owners house to ask if they had any fly spray and returned with a can of Raid without even so much as an apology. I'm still hunting flies this morning.
  1. Corners of kitchen floors around the kick boards aren't what I would describe as clean. Most people wouldn't notice, but again, this is supposed to be 'luxury'.
  1. Cobwebs in the bathroom and living area. Large cobweb and dead bugs behind a plant pot.
  1. The room is set up with a sofa bed and a king sized bed. The sofa bed is basic, which is what I'd expected but the bed is horrendous. Think foldable steel frame with a mattress that wouldn't be out of place in a prison cell. I'm in agony down the left hand side of my body this morning.
  1. Shower is freezing cold.
  1. I haven't stopped scratching since we arrived yesterday.

Other than that, it's fine! 😂

Am I being too fussy? I'm going to mention it to the hosts today but despite having another night booked for tonight, we're going home, mainly because I can't risk being in any more pain from the bed.

It was booked through hotels.com so I might contact them to see if there is any recourse I have. My main objection is around the 'luxury' description, which it isn't.

Has anyone else complained and got anywhere with a private host? Best case scenario is money back for tonight, but can't see that happening. Any advice gratefully received!

Thanks in advance. x

I think your complaint is with the owner and hotels.com which is just a booking platform. As the owners are there I would go and ask them to come and have a look and explain your issues to them calmly and quietly and see what they say.

I don't think you can complain about a spider but the rest of it sure

AllesAusLiebe · 02/09/2023 08:33

Thanks - yeah, think you're right about the spider @jallopeno. It just felt like another unwanted addiction to our stay! I guess they can appear anywhere.

@Rocknrollstar thanks. I'll start with the owner. Do you think that hotels.com won't be able to offer any help because they're just the go-between with us and the owner?

I love complaining usually, but for some reason I'm nervous about this and questioning whether I'm taking things too seriously!

Also possibly leave out the cobweb behind the plant
