Day in Dover - help!

I'm taking my mum to meet an old friend in Dover. She's on a cruise which is stopping in Dover for the day. Neither of them are particularly 'fit' (hip problems, friend has limited mobility) for walks along the White Cliffs etc and am really struggling with what to do with them for the day. We'll be going for lunch which will kill a couple of hours but had anyone got any suggestions what to do with the other six or seven hours?!!
I'll have a car that I can drive us places...
Thank you!

Dover castle seems the obvious suggestion

LegendsBeyond · 13/07/2023 18:52

The castle’s great.

MeThinksTime · 13/07/2023 18:53

Most tourist places round there require some mobility I.e the castle. Kearnsey abbey Park is nice for a coffee outside, nice view. Or you could do something like the cinema? There is one very close to the docks.

Deal has a nice long promenade to walk along and a pier. Also has some nice shops & cafes. It’s a short drive from Dover.

Floralnomad · 13/07/2023 18:55

The castle is really hilly , I’d go to Walmer castle about 15/20 minutes away , much flatter and a pleasant garden . It’s also a lovely castle with a great history from different eras .

The castle will probably be too much for them. However, we enjoyed the Battle of Britain memorial at Capel le Ferne. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Capel-le-Ferne.htm

The Harbour Arm at Folkestone is also a nice place for a stroll

BarbieBunches · 13/07/2023 18:55

Dover Castle is fab but very hilly!

PixiePirate · 13/07/2023 18:55

I’d scoot along to Deal. Much nicer than Dover. Fish and chips, ice creams, independent shops and the castle etc.

Beautifulsunflowers · 13/07/2023 18:58

Although the castle is lovely it does require a lot of walking and climbing if you go inside the castle. How about meeting up, go get a coffee for a nice sit down and catch up. Then maybe drive to walmer castle which is not too far away and is smaller with lovely grounds. Afternoon tea somewhere in deal? Maybe The Lane - I’ve heard great reviews! Then back to Dover so mums friend can reboard the ship.

I'd recommend Walmer Castle and Deal promenade. Both lovely if the weather is good.

Beautifulsunflowers · 13/07/2023 18:59

Haha @Floralnomad great minds!

Walmer Castle is much better for accessibility than Dover Castle. Canterbury isn't far...maybe the Cathedral? That's pretty accessible. Dover Museum is really good in the town centre. Dover Marina is nice for a stroll.

Dover is very hilly even if you park in blue badge parking. Another vote for Walmer castle which has lovely gardens and lots of seating areas (plus bronze corgis in the queen's garden).

Also and rather surprisingly, Dover museum is a very interesting quirky little place.

Kitcaterpillar · 13/07/2023 19:19

Everyone's nailed it really: go to Deal (which also has a little castle)

AnAdultCat · 13/07/2023 21:12

Thank you so much everyone!
Deal sounds great :)

Deal and Walmer . Walmer castle and and gardens are beautiful and it is all quite flat . Lovely cream teas and the location is amazing. Then Deal castle is more of a castle ruin but interesting . Dover castle is very , very hilly .

rockingbird · 13/07/2023 21:29

I'd opt for Folkestone Harbour, 10/15 minutes away and has some lovely little gems. The harbour has many great shops and places to eat, weather permitting it's a nice place to stop off. Deal is also lovely and not too far way. Walmer castle gardens are beautiful and I'm sure they'd appreciate the beautiful flowers and queen mother pond area there.

Floralnomad · 13/07/2023 22:12

Walmer is my favourite castle anywhere .
