Zoos with tigers

My son loves Big cats, but especially tigers.
Where is best in the UK to see them? Bonus points if its easily accessed by public transport (considering a few days away so where is not necessarily a big deal).

Chester zoo. Best in the country by far. Lots of big cats and doesn’t leave you feeling sad

Mmotherknowsbest · 13/06/2023 21:23

Colchester zoo for sure

piedbeauty · 13/06/2023 21:24

Whipsnade. Or Paradise Park. Or Hamerton Zoo. Or Woburn safari park.

Dorimon · 13/06/2023 21:25

Highland Wildlife Park is by far the best. They also have Snow Leopards. But not the best for public transport.

IncomingTraffic · 13/06/2023 21:26

Edinburgh zoo has tigers and is easy to get to by public transport.

I was going to say here, love it, and it has polar bears! But not good with public transport. Maybe if you stayed in Kingussie or Newtonmore there may be a bus?

What about staying at or near Longleat Safari Park? Nice for a couple of days plenty to do and they may do a communal bus round the driving parts.

I’ve been a member of Chester Zoo for ten years and in that time I think I have seen the tigers twice. Both from afar. Once awake and once asleep. The enclosure is brilliant for them. But I wouldn’t go there banking on seeing them!

HelloSunshine12 · 13/06/2023 21:35

Yes Colchester zoo.

igivein · 13/06/2023 21:39

Yorkshire Wildlife Park (Doncaster). The enclosures are excellent, but laid out in such a way that you get to see the animals up close.

Tygertiger · 13/06/2023 21:41

Chester Zoo. Best zoo in the UK by a country mile.

I’d avoid any zoo with polar bears. Impossible to keep them humanely in captivity. In the wild their territories are the size of Portugal.

PuttingDownRoots · 13/06/2023 21:42

Seconding Yorkshire Wildlife Park. There's a bus from the train station that goes past the entrance. They have lions, tigers, very shy leopards and some gorgeous Polar bears.

Porthia · 13/06/2023 21:43

London zoo has tigers and the habitat is well designed so you actually see them.

We are members there and Whipsnade which also has tigers but the whipsnade enclosure is much older and we often can’t find the tigers in there! Went at half term and spent ages looking for them but nothing!

we always see them at London. And they have lions too!

Port Lymph. Plus you can stay in the Tiger Lodge if you want to spend quite a lot on one night away! Looks amazing though.

Jinglybangly · 13/06/2023 21:47

Are you bothered about maybe seeing happy tigers or are you happy to see miserable tigers?

Winglessvulture · 13/06/2023 21:48

Marwell Zoo. They have tigers and snow leopards. There is also a hotel practically in the carpark.

flagpie · 13/06/2023 21:54

I didn't think Chester Zoo was that good tbh. The tiger enclosure has a lot of area you can't see too.

Andanotherone01 · 13/06/2023 21:56

Paradise Park in Hertfordshire is the best by far for big cats

theDudesmummy · 13/06/2023 22:02

It's Ireland, but if you want to come over, Fota Wildlife Park has a good tiger enclosure.

Batalax · 13/06/2023 22:05

We had afternoon tea with the tigers at paradise park. Kids enjoyed it and I don’t remember it as being extortionate.

Edinburgh zoo has them but the enclosures are big and on a hillside so you could go and not actually see them! It’s good for the tigers but less so for spectators.
yorkshire wildlife park had really good viewing areas for all animals but I’m not sure how you’d get there (bus from Doncaster station maybe?)

Jijithecat · 13/06/2023 22:14

Chessington World of Adventures. They have a Land of the Tigers. We had really good views of the tigers and lots of other animals on our last visit.
Plus there's the theme park if you like rides.

Gloriousgardener11 · 13/06/2023 22:14

Paignton zoo is great and has tigers.
