Uk in January

I'm traveling to the uk for a christmas wedding from the southern hemisphere. I'll spend Christmas with some friends but from the beginning of January will be at a bit of a loose end. Where shall I go? Any suggestions?

It will be dark, probably cold, very likely wet. Definitely not the best time of year to visit.

I suggest a city break where you can go into warm, bright buildings. London, Edinburgh, Bath, Manchester...

How long for?

Cherrybl0ssm · 01/04/2023 16:25

City break for sure.

Ooh, cold! 🥶 Where are you traveling from? If a warmer climate bring a warm coat and woolies!

It's indoor season, so afternoon tea, spa days, country pubs, visits to National Trust properties, galleries+ museums. Stay away from coastal areas.

I'm traveling from NZ. Lived here for 20 years but originally from the UK. I used to travel back reasonably often to see my parents in Cornwall but they have died now. I love Edinburgh so could go there for a break. I'm considering getting a cheap flight to somewhere like Amsterdam or Prague for a few days. Or perhaps to Rome or Barcelona. Any thoughts?

Budapest?

I’d suggest one of the more beautiful cities so Oxford ( but can be v cold) or Edinburgh ( ditto), or maybe Bristol for lively city vibe. Failing that, how about Seville, might be cold but at least a good chance of sun.

Just bear in mind that Jan is some of the worst weather in the UK. Cosy indoor plans would be good :)

I've had some lovely January breaks (DH birthday is in Jan) in the Lake District, Northumberland and the Whitby/Robin Hoods Bay/Staithes area. The weather was sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy and always cold. However it depends what you're interested in...

You might want to make the most of London if you're not likely to visit again from a distance and if course other UK cities are fabulous if you not visited those.

I live in a big city so the coast or countryside with a log fire in a pub for the afternoon appeals to me but with options of museums or castles...so York or the Northumberland coast could be an option.

Depends on where you've already been, what your transport options are, duration of stay and what you're interested in!
