Edinburgh Sunday Lunch

Hey,

I’m taking my dh to Edinburgh for his birthday in May- he loves a Sunday lunch and I don’t really but I’ll tolerate it. Any recommendations? I was looking at the balmoral hotel restaurant

He also loves Islay whisky - I’ve found a few likely places to go but any advance on these?

Devils advocate bar
Le di vin wine bar
Jolly Botanist
Spence gleneagles Sunday lunch?
Kyloe Sunday lunch
The dome
Cocktail mafia
Johnny walker
Balmoral whisky tasting and lunch
Dulce dinner

It depends what sort of thing you want but the balmoral will probably be very formal and might be small portions rather than a hearty roast. Kyloe at the west end is meant to be very good and would be more casual than the balmoral.

Whiski bar or whiski rooms (owned by the same folk) are good for whisky lovers. They do tasting sessions in the rooms or the bar usually has a couple of tastings flights and the bar staff tend to be pretty knowledgeable and able to make recommendations based on your likes and dislikes.
the royal mile whisky store (despite being a tourist trap) is also very good for buying bottles you wouldn’t find in the supermarket. Again, talk to the staff about your likes /dislikes and they will recommend things. I can’t stand the stuff but they’ve never failed me for birthday presents for whisky lovers ;)

Kyloe Sunday lunch without a doubt the best in the city!

Shoxfordian · 28/03/2023 18:44

Thanks! Do you happen to know if I can have a steak instead of a Sunday lunch at kyloe? Will look at the whisky suggestions too.

Looking at the website their Sunday roast is to serve multiples of 2 people (which seems a bit ridiculous to me!), I’m sure they’ll do the normal menu alongside it but probably worth giving them a ring to check. Note it also has to be ordered by Friday.

Shoxfordian · 28/03/2023 21:30

Thanks @emmathedilemma
Might have a google around for somewhere else

Sorry it is definitely a set lunch for multiples of two.

Is he a member of the smws? Might be worth looking into if not.. plus they have 2 sites in Edinburgh

I took my DH here for his birthday. A bit quirky and bohemian but very nice. It won’t be a traditional Sunday lunch though. It’s not cheap but lunch is better value. https://www.thegardenerscottage.co/

@TheGander
We have just been there. Slightly underwhelmed to be honest. Much preferred the Timberyard and Fhior. Noto is great too. These aren’t Sunday lunch/steak places but they are wonderful!

TheGander · 31/03/2023 15:30

Fair enough, we liked it but it does get mixed reviews.

Shoxfordian · 31/03/2023 21:00

Thanks, he’s not in swcs but will have a look for events. Gardeners cottage looks nice though - will google the other ones too

@TheGander The cooking was great but we felt the overall plate of food could have been better. Communal table was interesting.

The spence Sunday lunch is excellent. Have been to many on your list and it’s probably my favourite.

MorrisZapp · 31/03/2023 21:20

The Ox do a fantastic roast, huge portions

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 31/03/2023 21:21

Lots of other great food options at Spence too if you want to have something other than roast.

used to love hawksmoor but we went last month for Sunday lunch and wasn’t as good as it used to be

Shoxfordian · 01/04/2023 07:03

Thanks, will look at the spence and the ox
I like Hawksmoor but thought it’d be good to go to places that aren’t chains, we can go there in London
