watch out for seagulls, they'll steal your chips / ice cream / picnic etc

Visit Beacon Farm ice cream parlour and tea rooms.
A really popular coastal walk is from Whitby to Sandsend. It has cliff top views and a fairly flat path. You need to check the tide times before hand though!
Get fish and ships from Hadley’s
Take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby to Goathland (Hogsmeade in Harry Potter). The cute village of Goathland is just a few mins walk up the bank from the station and has a few shops and pubs. You could walk along the Rail Trail to Grosmont and catch the train back from there or walk to the Mallyan Spout Waterfall. Goathland Station has a tea room.
Staithes is a lovely little fishing village about 10 miles from Whitby and has lots of great walks of varying lengths. My favourite is about 4 miles and goes up on the high cliffs to Port Mulgrave for some gorgeous coastal views. Port Mulgrave is a lovely place to stop and have a rest and has a number of cafes and pubs.
There are boat trips available at the town harbour. When we last went they were very reasonably priced and free for under 5s.

Do not stay at the Royal Hotel. Unless it has been completely renovated since I was there 18 months ago. It completely ruined our stay in Whitby. Awful place.

ArnoldBee · 14/03/2023 12:48

The brewery next to the abbey :-)

squashyhat · 14/03/2023 12:48

Actually unless it's been knocked down and rebuilt. Which I see from Tripadvisor that it hasn't.

Try not to go on a weekend, sometimes it's that busy foot traffic around the Shambles comes to a complete stop.

Funf · 17/03/2023 16:25

Thanks I will let you know what we end up visiting

there is a car park with very cheap all day parking

Clariana · 17/03/2023 16:45

Visit the lobster hatchery on the quayside, its opening soon, I had a preview, and it's fascinating!

LiliansViewScarborough · 18/03/2023 22:54

Fish and chips at the Magpie Cafe and iced buns from Botham's of Whitby are a must.

If you are wishing to see further afield do come to Scarborough for a.day. If you're coming before the end of June, there are lots of £2 bus adventures to be had . www.transdevbus.co.uk/coastliner/services/YCD/843

Have a great stay! 🌊

SerenaB12 · 18/03/2023 23:46

Great news! Hope the weather was kind too!

Treacletart9 · 09/04/2023 22:44

The Duke of York pub overlooking the harbour. Amazing views. The Magpie for seafood.

Nat6999 · 10/04/2023 02:28

The Whitehouse Hotel next to the golf course, the food is amazing.

MarieG10 · 10/04/2023 03:00

Robin Hoods Bay is also nice to visit when you return.

Funf · 10/04/2023 07:01

Weather was ok, cold but dry.
Went to the Little Angle and Dotties Tearoom in Staithes, both great and a few others I can't remember!

Just back from a cracking long weekend in Whitby.
I can highly recommend Sherlock’s coffee shop on Flowergate for the scones. They have a room upstairs as well.
Also on Flowergate the Beer o’clock micropub.
Flights of ale, good choice of local ish beers, and a dog bar!
At the abbey, the Dracula reenactment (11am, 1pm, 3pm) was very entertaining and humorous.

CheersToMe · 01/09/2023 15:50

Bumping this for more tips as I've just booked a few days in Whitby. Smile Never been, will be staying near the abbey.

Femalefootyfan · 01/09/2023 16:37

Trenchers for great food, they don’t take reservations for couples and there’s often a queue but it’s worth waiting for. Robin Hood’s Bay a little further down the coast is lovely and I second Staithes too, it’s gorgeous. Walk the 199 steps to the Abbey, have a wander in the little church there, it’s fascinating.

There’s so many places to eat & drink and lots of independent shops but it’s all quite hilly until you get to the cliff top for the walk to Sandsend, then it’s quite flat.

CheersToMe · 01/09/2023 20:09

Thank you.
199 steps Shock

ButterflyBitch · 01/09/2023 20:16

the Dracula experience. I think I screamed and laughed in equal measure.

CheersToMe · 01/09/2023 21:10

I should read the book/watch the film! #notagoth

NutellaNut · 01/09/2023 21:48

I’m going to Whitby in a couple of weeks. Reading with interest.
