Lincoln weekend. Any recommendations?

Hi, I'm heading to Lincoln in a couple of weeks for an overnight stay and would really appreciate some recommendations of where to go. It's my first weekend away with a new partner and we'd be looking for nice bars, a lovely restaurant and any other ideas to fill a day and a bit. It will be from Saturday lunch time until Sunday afternoon. We're staying quite centrally and so want to stick to the city centre really. Thanks in advance. It's a new relationship after I left a really shitty marriage and I'm looking forward to a lovely weekend away.

Up on the hill there is the cathedral, Bishop’s palace and the Castle which was used as a prison. There are also nice pubs and restaurants. The main shopping area is by the river.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 09/03/2023 08:30

I definitely recommend Ole Ole Tapas Bar

Mercedesbenz2022 · 09/03/2023 08:32

Ohh we visit Lincoln often , tower hotel is lovely , a busy pub rather than a stilted hotel bar , great breakfast, for something grander white hart hotel , very classic in its look ,

to eat , ole ole if you like tapas , great atmosphere , fun vibe , but book ahead as it does get busy

lots to do , castle, cathedral , that bloody walk up steep hill !!! Lol , good shops , lots of Gift shops / independents on steep hill ,

enjoy

Agree with Ole Ole and this place if you can get a table www.jewshouserestaurant.co.uk

The castle is great for a visit and the cathedral is amazing.

I loved Lincoln. I'd quite like to live there.

I definitely recommend Ole Ole Tapas Bar

That's my friends bar and I love seeing people recommend it

QuinnofHearts · 09/03/2023 08:38

I miss living in Lincoln. If you have a car and like ice cream, I recommend Daisymaid in Skellingthorpe.

LemonyTwist · 09/03/2023 21:32

Thank you for all the replies. We both love tapas so will bear that in mind.
Are there any particular nice bars for a few after dinner drinks?

The cheese society is amazing

Bbq1 · 09/03/2023 21:49

Is the Magna Carta still there? Dh and I stayed in Lincoln many years ago now. We had a great time, it's a lovely place and I had the best steak pie EVER at The Magna Carta!

user1471284740 · 09/03/2023 21:52

I second The Cheese Society

TigerDroveAgain · 09/03/2023 21:59

I spent last Saturday in Lincoln!

We ate at Olivares tapas : it was fine, but all the restaurants get madly booked up

The Magna Carta is definitely still there (assume this means the pub!)

Cardinals Hat was good

Steep Hill is super steep!

Lots of nice looking pubs off the beaten track

Catherdral is v interesting but go on Saturday not Sunday if you just want a quick look

Completely off topic but I went to the Bomber Command museum which is a couple of miles out of town and really liked it but it might not be your thing

Snoopystick · 09/03/2023 22:01

If you’re going on a pub crawl - start at the top and make your way down steep hill. It’s awful after a few trying to do it the other way round!

Snoopystick · 09/03/2023 22:09

The Cosy Club is nice for a drink - it’s in a lovely building with a vaulted ceiling

Prestissimo · 09/03/2023 22:26

The White Hart hotel is nice for cocktails (just off castle square at the top of the hill). There's also a nice gin bar at the bottom of the hill called Pessimist, but it's a bit out of the way. Cardinals Hat gets really busy but is nice.

Cheese Society is great for lunch - I very much recommend the fondue.

The cathedral is lovely to wander in - free on Sundays if you can dodge the actual services but you often can't see all of it. A roof tour is definitely worthwhile if the weather's good and actually the cafe is nice for lunch.

Have a great weekend.

Superb cocktails in a speakeasy setting: www.viceandco.co.uk/

In the same downhill area is this great gin and wine bar: www.thepessimist.co.uk/

There's a new Korean place that's quite yummy if you fancy that sort of thing, that also isn't a chain.

The Electric Bar at the Hilton is a nice setting for cocktails too but is either your first or last stop because it's away from everything else, not far far out but still requires walking.

MrsSewAndGrow · 09/03/2023 22:50

The Cornhill Quarter has your nice shops and chains but if you go uphill (which you must) there's lots of little independent shops in the Bailgate that are worth a look in.

ISpyCobraKai · 09/03/2023 22:56

I'm interested too, but for a day, not involving bars and restaurants!
Any good museums or things other than the cathedral that shouldn't be missed?

Too early in the relationship for this? 😀

ISpyCobraKai · 09/03/2023 23:14

Ha. Is that the golf place?
My friends I stay with near Lincoln showed me that at Christmas when I was there!

Hairfriar · 09/03/2023 23:15

Everyone shush about Ole Ole - it's hard enough to get in there already.

supadupapupascupa · 09/03/2023 23:30

The collection is really good for a visit if you want some history. Over the road is the usher gallery.
Up hill there's the museum of Lincolnshire life.
Cocktails must be straight and narrow at the bottom of steep hill
The botanist does lovely food as well as cozy club
There's a fair few pizza places opened up recently too

If you like fine dining, The Old Bakery is fantastic and the prices are really reasonable.
It's on Burton Road, not far from the back entrance of the castle.

Nevertouchatiger · 19/03/2023 09:06

Would recommend Cardinals Hat for drinks - they also do really nice sharing boards for food.

Food wise, would recommend Kine, Lawson’s, Thai no1, castle view, ole ole or browns pie shop.

If you want drinks with something extra there is carousel which has arcade type games and also glory holes mini golf.

Aside from the Castle and Catherdral, The Collection gallery is nice. The museum of Lincolnshire life also good. If you have a car the bomber command museum is worth a visit.

So many great independent shops in the Bailgate/Steep hill area too.

Hope you have a great time!
