Weekend away recommendations

DH and I have a rare opportunity for a couple of nights away by ourselves coming up. Budget isn't huge, but we'd like a nice hotel near pubs/live music with walks or stuff to see during the day. York is probably going to be too expensive, we quite liked Grantham a few years ago.
We're in the East of England, ang generally go North! Any ideas where we could go?

Stamford is a lovely town and there are some great walks at Rutland Water nearby. There’s also Burghley House to visit.
We also like Matlock Bath, from where you can visit Heights of Abraham, Black Rocks and Chatsworth. We stayed at Oakhill just outside in a little place called Cromford.

We love Aldeburgh / Southwold area and that was always our weekend bolt hole. Try The Crown at Westleton of accommodation in Woodbridge which is a lovely little town.

Liverpool is a great city, it has something for everyone and all budgets. Its compact so walkable if you get the train.
It really has everything you are looking for and more.
Try to avoid weekends when big events are on as they do increase the prices.

This might be too expensive it was £1000 for 4 adults

Southwold is heavenly.
Durham? Gorgeous place.
Whitby is beautiful. We spent a weekend there and Scarborough last year.

Lake District is beautiful

Newcastle or Liverpool.

Durham is gorgeous but I don't think it's any less expensive than York in terms of nice hotel options.

Echo the above suggestion for Liverpool, or Leeds?

Snoopystick · 06/03/2023 19:03

Hi it’s been a few years since I’ve been but we always use air b and b’s - not had a bad one yet.

Not sure of your budget or what you mean by a nice hotel but I love York and premier inn is nice enough for us. You want to be out and about on a weekend away anyway and there is so much to see and do in York. We stayed in a PI in Edinburgh recently, rang ahead to see if they had a room with a view and got a huge room overlooking the castle. Also loved Stamford which someone else mentioned and Bamburgh - fantastic beach walks. Found so many great places after lockdown!

Just thought of somewhere else - The Cavendish at Baslow - lovely hotel, lovely food and very close to Chatsworth.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions!
