Northern towns/villages/cities for a wander such as Scarborough, York, Harrogate, Whitby

We live in the North East and enjoy a drive out. Our usual places to go are York, Goathland and Whitby as we enjoy the attraction options as well as shops to wander around. Can anyone add anymore to our list as we really have done our usual two places to death, as much as we adore them I enjoy discovering new places!

I've had a Google and that has thrown up Hawes, but I've never been and don't just want to go to a village to find out there is only a pub and a few gift shops.

Today I fancy a wander and lunch, with charity shops for kids to find stuff for their hobbies. A little museum/visitor centre and a park would be good but not essential!

Do you like cheese? Hawes is home to the Wensleydale dairy. It's a really interesting visit and you can watch the cheeses being made. Plus there's a nice cafe.

The town itself is small but pretty, worth a visit.

Saltburn?

Have you looked on Google Maps? That's good for gauging the size of the town, looking for any green spaces and also if you have the right settings, you can get it to show the cafes, museums, shops etc.

Second Hawes and the creamery too.
