Hi all, I'm planning on heading up to Edinburgh for a long weekend sometime in March/April as I'd love to go. Any recommendations on hotels? We're celebrating so I'd like somewhere special and am prepared to push the boat out a bit after 4 years of not going anywhere!! I've done an Internet trawl but so many look lovely (same for restaurants if anyone has any good reccs there). Thank you.

The Balmoral and Calendonian (aka The Caley) Waldorf Astoria would be top of the range but very pricey.
The George, Sheriton, Kimpton Charlotte Square, Cheval Edinburgh Grand, The Scotsman, Radisson Blu
Apex Grassmarket (there's 2 hotels practically next door to each other), Apex Waterloo Place
Motel One
There's all the usual premier inn / travelodge / IBIS type places in the city centre too.

The new Gleneagles Townhouse has just opened I believe. Very pricey though. Looks amazing!

EVHead · 23/01/2023 08:14

The George Hotel is very central and is lovely.

The Apex in the Grassmarket is lovely - get a room with a view of Edinburgh Castle!

Ariautec · 23/01/2023 08:15

Some fabulous restaurants, including Michelin starred, in Leith.

ChateauProvence · 23/01/2023 08:17

The Kimpton on Charlotte square was amazing

The new Virgin hotel in Victoria street is amazing. Very stylish conversion of a listed building. Near the grassmarket but not as busy. Fab bar and restaurant and incredible service.

Murrayfield Hotel is lovely, I have stayed there many times. It’s a 5 minute bus ride into the city centre and good value for money. Staff are friendly, food is excellent and rooms never disappoint. It’s walking distance to the zoo and opposite the Murrayfield Stadium.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 23/01/2023 08:19

I second (or maybe even third) Apex grassmarket, I’ve stayed on both many times, latest being mid December.

Our favourite, if you want atmosphere but don't want gyms and spas, is Nira Caledonia in New Town.

fairgame84 · 23/01/2023 08:20

We stayed at hotel du vin in May. We had a junior suite and it was lovely. Best nights sleep ever!

emmathedilemma · 23/01/2023 08:35

ooh yes Nira Calendonia is a good call too!
Also The Raeburn in Stockbridge if you want something smaller.
Eden Locke serviced apartments
The Glasshouse
How far are you willing to push the boat out? ;) www.fingal.co.uk/

The new Virgin hotel, Hotel du Vin or the Glasshouse would be my recs.

The Balmoral, Caley, George are all lovely but the rooms are quite bland unless you're paying £££ for suites, imo.

Benmac · 23/01/2023 09:53

Recently had a night in the Glasshouse. It was fabulous.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 15/02/2023 07:44

Thank you all for your recommendations. After looking at them all we've settled on the Kimpton, Charlotte Square as the one for us. I can't wait to go!!

Hiya, me again - I'm hoping to pick your brains for good restaurants in Edinburgh now I've got travel and hotels sorted. We like a wide variety of food so no cuisine type is off limits. Any recommendations would be fabulous!!

We had a great meal in Dusit a Thai restaurant not far from the hotel. I emailed the hotel before we went and they sent over a list of great recommendations- have a great time

emmathedilemma · 02/03/2023 16:49

If you're at Charlotte Square end of town then my suggestions would be Vesta, Whighams Wine Cellar, and La P'etit Folie which are all on your doorstep. You could also walk down into Stockbridge for Scran & Scallie (owned by Tom Kitchin), the Raeburn and Hectars bar are all nice too.
Howies always gets recommended for tourists as it's very Scottish.
Contini (Italian), Cafe Andaluz (tapas), Cadiz (fishy) and Chaophraya (Thai) are a short walk along George Street.
Wahaca (Mexican) and Dishoom (Indian) for the better end of chains at St Andrew Square.
Makar's mash bar, Whiski Bar / Rooms for hearty and filling pub grub type food.
La Garrigue - french, a bit pricier but not pretentious.
The Outsider on George IV bridge for something a bit different.
Vittorias are a local chain of Italians, there's one on George IV bridge.

BABA is in your hotel and actually brilliant. As is Aizle - though Aizle is a fixed price/no choices/£££ set up which might feel like too much of a commitment.

There's a new street food hub just opened at the top of Leith Walk in the Omni Centre, which has 10 different vendors. For pub grub, take a stroll along pretty William Street and head to Teuchters, it's a traditional pub with a fire and a mug menu (the restaurant downstairs is pretty good too).

Drinks, Panda and Sons is just down the road and is fantastic, it does get busy at the weekend though so you should probably book. You're close to Bramble too, which is excellent.

You could do a lot worse than wander down the water of Leith to Stockbridge, which is like a village in the city. Drinks at Smith and Gertrude or Good Brothers.

For something more casual, walk the Royal Mile from the top (castle) to the bottom (Holyrood Palace), climb Arthur's Seat and reward yourself at the Pakora Bar which is just brilliant.

RunnerDown · 06/03/2023 08:25

Dishoom is great.
The menu at the Scran and Scallie sounds like usual pub grub fare-but it’s absolutely not- it’s really delicious. ( and Stockbridge is near the city centre and a lovely area to explore)
Urban Angel is great for lunch

tothesea · 06/03/2023 08:38

Seconding Baba, we had a gorgeous meal in there recently.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 07/03/2023 13:04

Thank you everyone. Lots to look through but it sounds like I'm in for a treat.

We love Papilio, a little Italian with delicious food (and very reasonably priced). We make a beeline there every time we visit Edinburgh.
