Christmas breaks

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good family breaks away for the weekend before Christmas? I did look at Europe but flights are very expensive so it's UK based now! It will be for 2 adults and 2 children, 6 and 8 years.
We're south east but happy to drive.
We'd love something specific to do whilst there rather than just going and seeing what's there so if anyone has any good recommendations of things to do with children we could work around that too.
I did consider Edinburgh but it's about 7 hours driving and I'm unsure if its worth it for a weekend?
Thank you

You're better on the train if you're going to Edinburgh, a car is a hindrance in the city due to the lack of parking. It's great for a city break but I would avoid in the run up to Christmas as the festive markets etc just make the city look tacky and they aren't really much fun for kids.
What about York? Similar vibe to Edinburgh but a lot closer.

In half term we had a lovely stay at a B&B called The Lighthouse near Frome in Somerset. It’s so family-friendly and just 10 minutes from Longleat Safari Park (which will have its ‘festival of light’ then). We also used it as a base to visit Bath and Wookey Hole.

We used to do lots of these little breaks and used to build them around trips to places such as Chatsworth House or Blenheim Palace.
