Will I be disappointed by Glasgow if I love Edinburgh?

We have an opportunity to visit Glasgow for the day tomorrow. DH is umming and ahhing about whether it's worth it. We love Edinburgh, the quirkiness and the history of it. However, will Glasgow be a let down in comparison? I can't think of any sights in Glasgow and DH says there is nothing of historical interest there....but I really wanted to see it just the once anyway. Please tell me is it worth a visit? What is a must-see if we go?

I'd say Glasgow feels like a much more "typical city" than Edinburgh. It reminded me a bit of Manchester. Lots of interesting places to see and visit though.

I personally prefer Edinburgh, because I'm not really a city girl, and Edinburgh doesn't really feel like a city to me — more like lots of little towns stuck together!

Have you been to Belfast? Glasgow is like a bigger version.

I think Glasgow has a lot more to offer than Belfast.

I know Belfast pretty well and I like it, but it isn’t a patch on Glasgow for architecture or cultural life. It’s nice but quiet. It’s energy is closer to Leeds than Glasgow to me (although Leeds also has more going on.)

I always think it’s interesting how accounts of Glasgow and Edinburgh so often consider the entirely of Glasgow (and judge it by it’s roughest bits very often) while focusing only on a tiny part of Edinburgh. (the bit that makes it feel more English at that!)

Edinburgh is only ‘walkable’ if you ignore the vast majority if the city. Even if you are focusing only on the postcardy bits, it’s bigger than some people seem to imagine.

They’re totally different cities.

lovely light

is that when it’s not raining. Or dark before 4pm? 🤣

Honest to God, we should stop selling Glasgow to tourists. We don't want it to get like Edinburgh. Wink

Wonder why @TartanLouby never came back? 🤔 Strange thing to try to start a bun fight over.

We went to Edinburgh and Glasgow last year for my birthday (2 nights in each) I’ve always loved Edinburgh and DP had never been before. Neither of us had been to Glasgow. Glasgow was amazing, but a totally different vibe to Edinburgh. We found more “trendy” places to eat/drink in Glasgow, for example. Edinburgh is a lot more historical. DP strongly preferred Glasgow.

Nah, wouldn't bother going. All the historic buildings in Scotland were rounded up in 1963 and bundled together into what we now call "Edinburgh City centre".

Edinburgh was actually built around an enormous natural dip in the landscape. Took 87 years to get full national agreement to fill in the dip and move the buildings. Historic Building Relocation was actually a bigger employer than ship building on the Clyde.

@ThorsBedazzler 😂

OP Glasgow cathedral dates from at least the 1200s, and Glasgow university from 1451. Hardly " no historical sites!"

As a PP said, the Necropolis is fascinating, and there are many amazing museums, mostly free to enter.

There's also the city centre mural trail:
