Will I be disappointed by Glasgow if I love Edinburgh?

We have an opportunity to visit Glasgow for the day tomorrow. DH is umming and ahhing about whether it's worth it. We love Edinburgh, the quirkiness and the history of it. However, will Glasgow be a let down in comparison? I can't think of any sights in Glasgow and DH says there is nothing of historical interest there....but I really wanted to see it just the once anyway. Please tell me is it worth a visit? What is a must-see if we go?

Your DH is a moron. There are things of historical interest in EVERY city.

Sunandflowers · 27/10/2022 21:17

Gosh, Glasgow is amazing! Very different from Edinburgh but a lovely city. Warm and vibrant. Definitely worth a visit

Rainbowshit · 27/10/2022 21:18

Nothing of historical interest?!? are you kidding me on?!

Glasgow university, Kelvingrove art gallery, mackintosh house, willow tea room. Glasgow cathedral, etc etc.

More than enough to keep you interested.

Feeling very sad about the art school right now though. 😩

RefuseTheLies · 27/10/2022 21:19

You should visit. Maybe not your DH though. He doesn’t sound like the kind of person weegies would like 😁

Kelvin grove Museum. National Museum of Transport. Glasgow Science Centre, Burrell Collection

Far better city centre shopping than Edinburgh.

Awesomeo · 27/10/2022 21:20

Glasgow is fabulous.

Isleoftights · 27/10/2022 21:20

The Burrell Collection....surely one of the greatest museums in the world.

PrawnMinister · 27/10/2022 21:21

I think you would be disappointed because Glasgow, while interesting in it's own 'raw' right it's not beautiful or sophisticated like Edinburgh.

LTB

Glasgow not Edinburgh, just the same way any city is not the same and any other city. Agree with PP, all cities have fascinating history.
The Cathedral and adjoining necropolis are amazing. Kelvingrove museum is stunning. The Burrell collection is one of my favourite places to visit. More than enough to occupy you for a day.

(terrible typos, you get the drift)

You'll fall in love with Glasgow. ⭐️

Discovereads · 27/10/2022 21:25

I much prefer Edinburgh to Glasgow. But anywhere is worth seeing once.

lannistunut · 27/10/2022 21:25

Pretty much everywhere is interesting for one day! Glasgow is really interesting, your DH is being ridiculous. Go on the tourist info website and just go.

Waterfallstop · 27/10/2022 21:25

It is a great city - you are looking at Edinburgh through a Disney len - you've just not seen that much of the real bits.

PrawnMinister · 27/10/2022 21:26

My impression was that Glasgow, while it had its own beautiful and upmarket places, is generally rougher, more artsy, loads more visible poverty on the streets. It has a grotty feel, 'we're rough but done well' defiant atmosphere. Edinburgh is classy, cookie cutter beautiful, smaller, more friendly to walk around... although Glasgow has good transport. They are very different with different feels about them. Glasgow might as well be its own country with their own strong identity. Edinburgh feels more 'Scotland'.

Aarohi · 27/10/2022 21:28

Agree with everyone else, and depending on your interests (and the weather on the day!)nalso take a look at Tenement House, the Botanic Gardens, the University/Gilmourhill, and the People's Place/Winter Garden.

Clearly never been

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 27/10/2022 21:28

As long as you go not anticipating Edinburgh Mark 2.

It's like being disappointed Rotterdam is nothing like Amsterdam, then losing out on enjoying what is good about Rotterdam.

ParkheadParadise · 27/10/2022 21:28

Glasgow is a fantastic place to visit.

midsomermurderess · 27/10/2022 21:28

I think some people tend to oversell Glasgow, by no measure is it 'amazing'. It's a formerly industrial city doing it's best to reinvent itself, like so many others. But a day spent there isn't wasted. The shopping is not bad, there are the usual run of galleries and restaurants. Finnieston, a bit out from the centre, has a good amount of choice. Edinburgh and Glasgow are like two sides of a coin and it might at least be interesting to see that. Before the usual outcry, 'have you even been to Glagow?', I lived there for several years

Coconut212 · 27/10/2022 21:29

Can’t stand Edinburgh but love Glasgow

NC12345665 · 27/10/2022 21:30

Edinburgh feels more 'Scotland'

Really? I think Edinburgh feels more 'England'

midsomermurderess · 27/10/2022 21:32

And I am baffled by Edinburgh bring called 'cookie cutter besutiful' What other city anywhere, with its stone, elegant austerity, looks like Edinburgh? Some definitely prefer Glasgow, but why run down so inaccurately the other place.

beachcitygirl · 27/10/2022 21:33

Alasdair Gray (shamelessly name dropping ) once said to me and I never forgot

"Edinburgh is like Paris & Glasgow is like Berlin"

Different but equally fabulous.
