Will I be disappointed by Glasgow if I love Edinburgh?

We have an opportunity to visit Glasgow for the day tomorrow. DH is umming and ahhing about whether it's worth it. We love Edinburgh, the quirkiness and the history of it. However, will Glasgow be a let down in comparison? I can't think of any sights in Glasgow and DH says there is nothing of historical interest there....but I really wanted to see it just the once anyway. Please tell me is it worth a visit? What is a must-see if we go?

I love Edinburgh and didn't like Glasgow. Edinburgh is unique while (as someone else said) Glasgow is just another post industrial UK city. Reminded me a bit of Leeds, which is somewhere else I don't find particularly special.

Isleoftights · 27/10/2022 21:36

'DH says there is nothing of historical interest there.' Er.....there are forty-nine grade A listed buildings in Glasgow (73 in Edinburgh). I'd start with 'The Counting House' pub.

As long as you go not anticipating Edinburgh Mark 2.

It's like being disappointed Rotterdam is nothing like Amsterdam, then losing out on enjoying what is good about Rotterdam.

Exactly this. It's pointless comparing. Just enjoy Glasgow on its own terms. It has nothing in common with Edinburgh. The historical context and path to how they are now are total contrasts - industrial v administrative centres; Victorian v ancient grandeur etc. I love both.

VinoDino · 27/10/2022 21:39

I'm in Edinburgh and love Glasgow. They aren't comparable to me. Just enjoy it in its own right.

SilverPeacock · 27/10/2022 21:39

The shopping is much better in Glasgow and city centre feels more lively and vibrant than Edinburgh does. West end has got museums and nice bits. It’s worth a day visit definitely.

Fluffluff · 27/10/2022 21:41

Edinburgh to me feels so fake.
All those bagpipes and tartan
Glasgow is a warm real and v interesting city

Haudyourwheesht · 27/10/2022 21:48

Glasgow might as well be its own country with their own strong identity. Edinburgh feels more 'Scotland'

That's funny because I feel the opposite is true. Edinburgh is tourist Scotland: Glasgow is Scotland.

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 27/10/2022 21:49

You need to know where you’re going in Glasgow- you can’t really stroll across the city centre for the day, as most things of interest are not in the centre. If you’re going by car, parking up and heading somewhere specific, it’s worth a day trip, otherwise it’s better to come back and stay a few days in an area that’s safe at night for tourists/those who don’t know where they’re going.

If you’re having a nice time in Edinburgh, I’d use the day to take a trip to somewhere such as North Berwick instead for a nice beach walk/fresh air, easy to get to from Edin.

I like Glasgow. It's very different to Edinburgh but is lovely in its own way. When I only had a day there, I did the red sightseeing bus tour and found it very interesting and informative. I've since been back a few times to explore the city a bit more.

My impression was that Glasgow, while it had its own beautiful and upmarket places, is generally rougher, more artsy, loads more visible poverty on the streets. It has a grotty feel, 'we're rough but done well' defiant atmosphere. Edinburgh is classy, cookie cutter beautiful, smaller, more friendly to walk around... although Glasgow has good transport. They are very different with different feels about them. Glasgow might as well be its own country with their own strong identity. Edinburgh feels more 'Scotland'.

"Edinburgh feels more Scotland" couldn't disagree more. Edinburgh is the theme park, the movie set.

Indiana2021 · 27/10/2022 22:57

If you're not really fussed about shopping (and the many, many architecturally stunning buildings in the City Centre - look upwards or you'll miss them!) I'd be inclined to advise you to head to the West End.
Lots of lovely cafes, restaurants, Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow Univerity is like Hogwarts in parts. Sounds like it'd be more up your street than the City Centre.

Invisimamma · 27/10/2022 23:23

I mean Glasgow's good, I'd go to Kelvin grove and Ashton lane, a wander round the west end. There's great shops. But....it has nothing on Edinburgh.

I may be biased as I studied in Edinburgh and now work there but it's a beautiful city and unrivaled by Glasgow imo.

Givemestrengthorvodka · 27/10/2022 23:27

Edinburgh is prettier but its not a patch on Glasgow when it comes to the people and the atmosphere. Glasgow is unique, go, walk around, enjoy the contrast. Absolutely worth a visit!

Janedoe82 · 27/10/2022 23:31

Have you been to Belfast? Glasgow is like a bigger version.

Derrymum123 · 27/10/2022 23:50

Glasgow is brilliant. Nothing like Edinburgh but I prefer it. Love the shopping, great tourist attractions and the people seem more friendly. Edinburgh is picturesque and great for visiting, but there's something extra special about Glasgow.

FeralWitch · 27/10/2022 23:52

I love Glasgow. It reminds me of New York. The people I met were unbelievably friendly.

Edinburgh wasn’t what it used to be, last time I went. Glasgow all the way for me!

Mojoj · 27/10/2022 23:54

Visit Glasgow. You'll love it. But don't bring your man🤣🤣

TheHappyLoser · 28/10/2022 00:01

I prefer Glasgow, full of life and lots to do.
Edinburgh I find very dull.
Horses for courses.

HopRockers · 28/10/2022 00:04

You have to "work" a bit more to see the beauty in Glasgow - mostly by looking up as the ground floor architecture wasn't protected as well as Edinburgh.
Kelvingrove Museum is one of my favourite places in the world.

If you know Belfast the comparison made up thread is pretty fair I think.

I'm not a shopper but those who are prefer Glasgow IME.

(And if you want history you'd be better off spending the day at Stirling Castle 😃)

GuyMontag · 28/10/2022 00:13

Glasgow is much better than Edinburgh. The museums and galleries are better. The shops are better. The food is better. The coffee is brilliant. The architecture is stunning. And standing at the top of Buchanan Street looking at the buildings, with the Clyde at the bottom and the hills beyond, is a fine fine place to be.

Edinburgh feels more 'Scotland'

Really? I think Edinburgh feels more 'England'

My DH is a Weegie and would agree with you

MilkshakesBringAllTheCoosToTheYard · 28/10/2022 00:50

Bloody hell, is a fully realised actual ancient country only allowed one 'good' city like?

Your DH is a tit.

Edinburgh feels more 'Scotland'

Really? I think Edinburgh feels more 'England'

Exactly this. I'm Glaswegian and live in Glasgow. Saying there is nothing of historical significance is ignorant. Others have mentioned the sights so I wont go over them again.

You only need to walk the streets of the west end where I live to see the beautiful buildings designed by Alexander Greek Thomson and others.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/10/2022 00:59

Much as I love Edinburgh, and visit a couple times a year - Glasgow is my favourite city in the Uk (outside of London).

Fantastic energy, great architecture, lovely light and incredibly friendly people. And lots to see as PPs say above. Leave your DP at home though..

MajorCarolDanvers · 28/10/2022 01:01

Glasgow is very different to Edinburgh but I live them both.
