York recommendations

Any recommendations for a weekend in York with a 6 year old and 3 year old? Planning a trip to Jorvik, wander round the Shambles, a trip to York maze and afternoon tea at Betty's. Am I missing any other must do's?

Walk on the walls is fun - and free! Also railway museum.

DoodlePug · 08/09/2022 20:52

The Cat Walk, it's a free map that takes you round the centre including the shambles looking for cat statues. Good fun and some history.

The Christmas shop on Stonegate is lovely

York chocolate story

York minster? Maybe a bit young but can look at the gargoyles and windows from the outside. The minister gardens are a nice place to have a run about and an ice cream.

With kids id check out Dig.

DoodlePug · 08/09/2022 20:54

Actually it's called the cat trail

Check out The Hocus Pocus Tiny Hotel if you need accommodation x

When are you going? York maze is closed until next summer (apart from Halloween scary stuff). With children that age, I'd go to the Castle Museum, Dig and The Railway Museum, and maybe go around the Minster with the explorer's backpacks they give to children.

www.theholeinwand.com this was a winner with my youngest recently - but book!!

CampervanQueen · 08/09/2022 21:03

I think everyone else has covered most options (definitely the Railway Museum with kids that age, particularly if it's raining!) but you could also consider the Museum and its gardens.

User1563 · 08/09/2022 21:05

york castle museum is a must do . Please don’t miss it!

QueenImprov · 08/09/2022 21:25

Thanks so much everyone, some things I didn't have on my list so really helpful.

Didn't realise York maze closed for summer, looks like plenty of other options.

York Chocolate Story. My two (similar ages) loved it. Don't forget blue Peter badges for Yorvik. Walls. Dig was a bit baby-ish IMO.
Railway museum free but rubbish. Not as good as it used to be.

The Museum Gardens park is lovely and there's often some birds of prey there which you can hold for just a few pounds.

Kellie45 · 11/09/2022 20:49

By the Cathedral there was an exhibition of masons who were restoring the building. Worth a look. Free!

The railway museum is fab, although it only takes an hour/hour and a half to get around.

There's also Elvington air museum but that's on the outskirts (not far from york maze). York maze is a maize maze, so only open when the maize is growing and its harvested in September.

The walls are lovely to walk around.

York chocolate story is great too.

Another vote for the National Railway Museum.

Also the gardens at the Yorkshire Museum and Minster.

Walk on the walls but keep the kids under control.

Ditto everything above, especially the castle & railway museums. Did Yorvic Viking Museum reopen after flooding? That's a good one. York Dig will be fun for the 6yo. If they like Harry Potter they will love the Shambles.
