Weekend getaway for friends

Does anyone have any recommendations for a weekend getaway/retreat for two adult women? We're not really interested in a spa. We're hoping for:

-1-2 hours by train from London (we would take taxi from station)
-relatively rural or pretty
-nice walks, preferably with pubs!
-a smidgen of luxury/character/history
-places to sit and read our books
-a bit healthy--if there were yoga or something we might want to join in, but a full-on yoga retreat would be too much!
-delicious food and good cocktails
-sharing a bedroom is fine, but we'd like our own beds
-no big golf hotels, you know what I mean

Hoping someone has an idea of the sort of place I mean! One of us will have had a really rough year medically (but will be able for walks, etc) and both are exhausted by parenting (some pretty challenging) teens. Any ideas? TIA

Winchester, Bath or Canterbury

A friend and I stayed in an AirBnb on The Shambles in Bradford-on-Avon. It’s got plenty of cafes and small shops and is good for pottering. It’s a short change on the train from Bath.

Good call on the cities - does anyone have a recommendation for a cosy yet sophisticated B&B or small hotel?

The Montagu Arms in the New Forest
The Runnymede on Thames
Minster Mill in the Cotswolds

@Fivemoreminutes1 Oooh, The Montagu Arms looks very much the thing.
It's just this side of corporate...

@PaulaSmith1 Would you recommend any particular hotels/B&Bs?
