Were they just unlucky or is this fairly typical for Suffolk?

My husband and son were walking to the beach in Adleburgh and some guy jumped out his house and yelled "Are you gay, you bastards?". He had "Sodom and Gomorrah" written on his bins. My daughter and I were elsewhere so the guy somehow decided they were a couple. Weird. Are people generally really homophobic and rude here?

Just as much as anywhere else. I hate it when people jump on the OP, but why would you think that about a place based on one interaction? That in itself is pretty stereotyping!

Theimpossiblegirl · 29/07/2022 14:58

Of course it wouldn't be representative of a whole community. Sounds like someone with their own issues so unlucky. Your ds or dh would be perfectly reasonable to report to 101.

BarryKentPoet · 29/07/2022 14:59

Yes, we are all exactly like that. HTH.

ShirleyJackson · 29/07/2022 15:00

Sounds like a homophobic weirdo. You find them everywhere, unfortunately.

At least this guy wore his bigotry on his sleeve, so he’s nice and easy to avoid. I find the insidious ones even worse, somehow.

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 15:00

They have reported it.

This is so weird!

sounds like some either horrible or mentally unwell man who could live anywhere.

I don’t know that area specifically but I find it unlikely Suffolk has a poor reputation for homophobia. It’s rural with lots of older people but generally quite quiet I thought.

TheFlis12345 · 29/07/2022 15:01

I know 3 gay couples in Suffolk and none of them have had any such issues.

BiscuitLover3678 · 29/07/2022 15:02

I think it’s ok for the op to ask if some areas are known for being more right wing/conservative in their views. Obviously shouting at someone is just this man but it might be some areas are known for these attitudes. Eg we all know this would be more common in some US states.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 29/07/2022 15:03

Waiting for someone to jump on the thread to say "Oh, you met old Tom! He lives on my street and is totally bonkers".

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 15:05

There was a thread I found from some time ago about north Essex which was partly why I was wondering as it's not a million miles away.

Virtually nobody local can afford to live in Aldeburgh so there is a pretty good chance he was a tourist or a second-homer from London.

Y7drama · 29/07/2022 15:11

Of course it isn’t. How can you judge a whole county on 1 person?!

ChaToilLeam · 29/07/2022 15:12

Sodom and Gomorrah on the bins? That’s fairly unique. Just imagining the conversations in that house: What do I do with the potato peelings, dear? Oh, just chuck them in Gomorrah, my beloved.

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 15:13

Well, it's very pretty but I wondered whether it might also be ultra Conservative. My teens are a bit fed up.

Fed up with what?

I had this in London with my sister on the tube escalators. A man going the other way shouted out 'bloody lesbians' really aggressively. So I don't think it's the area, OP, no. You get nutters everywhere.

takeitandleaveit · 29/07/2022 15:18

They stumbled upon a random loon, that's all.

JustALittleHelpPlease · 29/07/2022 15:22

If you're visiting why on earth do you think this person is local and not also visiting? Or do you think homophobes/people with mental health issues never travel?

I must admit Aldeburgh seems an odd choice for a holiday with teens to me though. No wonder they're fed up Grin

IME of Suffolk and Norfolk, the more Titan the community the more is like during Bank in time, including the racism, homophobia and misogyny and I have family living in both countries do go there a lot.
About 3/4 years ago we went to a village panto which included a scene where two middle aged white men put on stereotypical Chinese outfits, put large fake teeth in , pretended they couldn't say the letter R and pulled their eyes out to the side, whilst making 'jokes' about " egg flied wice" . DH and I were sat there agog while the rest of the audience laughed along riotously. So much misogyny in that show too it was like Jim Davidson had written it. In the village hall after when we gently raised the 'old fashioned nature' of some of the 'jokes', eyes were told and we were told Londoners like us are too uptight. I grew up in the East end pre gentrification and live in Essex, I'm far from sheltered.

I was also reprimanded by the landlord of my gran's local in a completely different Suffolk village, for having the audacity to work when I had a baby! He actually asked me if my husband didn't earn enough to keep me!!! This was around 2 and a half years ago.
So not completely typical in my experienced but also not completely unexpected..

Seywot · 29/07/2022 15:27

I think it's the complete opposite there to be honest. There is very little opportunities for children in comparison to other counties and the funding in education is very low but there's lots of support for the community.

RewildingAmbridge · 29/07/2022 15:28

*IME of Suffolk and Norfolk, the more isolated the community the more it's like travelling back in time

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 15:28

He was local because he was in his house

Some of the idiots round here voted for Nadine Dorries. That doesn't mean everyone in Mid Bedfordshire is a similarly deluded dyed-in-the-wool Tory.

You came across one nutter. That's all.

bilbodog · 29/07/2022 15:39

I moved here 3 years ago and havent seen or heard anything like that so, hopefully, it was a local loon.

User12398712 · 29/07/2022 15:41

He was local because he was in his house

I'm not sure how you knew that it was his house but even if it was, it still doesn't mean he is local. Around a third of homes in the town are second homes.
