Were they just unlucky or is this fairly typical for Suffolk?

My husband and son were walking to the beach in Adleburgh and some guy jumped out his house and yelled "Are you gay, you bastards?". He had "Sodom and Gomorrah" written on his bins. My daughter and I were elsewhere so the guy somehow decided they were a couple. Weird. Are people generally really homophobic and rude here?

If he jumped out of them from a house, I'm pretty sure it was his house unless he hides in other peoples' houses

A significant proportion of houses in aldeburgh are holiday lets

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 15:58

They probably don't have Sodom and Gomorrah written on their bins if they are though.

Oh come on.

User12398712 · 29/07/2022 16:04

Ok, let's say he was local. You have met one unpleasant local and now assume that everyone from the area is homophobic.

Where are you from, OP? Is everyone from your area judgemental like you?

SeptimusWarrenSmith · 29/07/2022 16:04

Was it Alan Partridge

exexpat · 29/07/2022 16:10

Given that Aldeburgh was pretty much put on the map for upmarket tourists by its most famous residents, the composer Benjamin Britten and his lover, the singer Peter Pears, who started the Aldeburgh festival and founded Snape Maltings, I think it is unlikely that the area is a particular hotbed of homophobia. In fact I think everyone I know who lives in Suffolk is gay or lesbian (may not be a representative sample...). You can get the odd religious nut anywhere.

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 16:14

They'd just been looking at Benjamin Britten's house when shouty person jumped out

OP posts:
Mufflette · 29/07/2022 16:17

You're totally right, the Sodom and Gomorrah bins are standard Suffolk county council issue and we're all encouraged to shout homophobic abuse at every passing tourist.

Could be worse, last time I was in Aldeburgh I encountered Giles Coren.

No wonder your teens are fed up 😆😂🤣

MrsMcisaCt · 29/07/2022 16:26

Of course it's not typical. What a question to ask.

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 16:32

Not a lot else to do!

I did point out that if you bump into a thoroughly vile individual in Aldeburgh, there is a good chance they are non-local. 😂

Some people on here are really nasty.

OP posts:
SeptimusWarrenSmith · 29/07/2022 17:02

Yes that was a bit strong.

I like Benjamin Britten as it goes and would like to see his house. Maybe the Soddom guy doesn't appreciate his music though.

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 17:06

My son wanted me to drive 1 1/2 hours to something he wanted to do. I said he could go to the house if he wanted something to do as I'd done stuff out every other day. And some teens are actually cultured.

In your opening post, you asked if the population of a whole county were generally homophobic and rude. I think you set the bar for nastiness.

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 17:13

My husband and son suffered homophobic abuse on holiday! And the people in the pub weren't very nice either! And yes, you are nasty

OP posts:
User12398712 · 29/07/2022 17:24

One person was abusive to your husband and son and you are now asking if everyone from that community is abusive? Do you really think it is ok to extrapolate your experience of one person to a whole community? I call that being judgemental and bigotted and if that makes me nasty, I'm proud to be nasty.

Maireas · 29/07/2022 17:32

Only two different bins?
Now that is backward.

Maireas · 29/07/2022 17:34

GMH1974 · 29/07/2022 15:28

He was local because he was in his house

How do you know that it was his house?

Sounds like you got off lightly op

balalake · 29/07/2022 18:15

@SeptimusWarrenSmith Alan Partridge would never venture into Aldeburgh, as it is in Suffolk and has no pedestrianisation scheme for him to review.
