North Berwick

Planning to visit North Berwick for 2-3 days. Used to spend family holidays there as a child but I haven’t been for years.

Where is good for food and drinks, best ice cream etc. Any shops not to be missed?

Probably staying at the Marine but happy to hear other recommendations.

Thanks

do You have children with you or not

Ooh, I'm going to follow this thread - I also used to go on family holidays to North Berwick and have many happy memories - I'd love to go back for a trip.

Alandas ice cream. Nice fish and chips on the road to the Sealife centre. Great cafe called Drift just along the road. Bonnie Badger at Gullane.

RollerPolarBear · 23/07/2022 13:45

Archerfield walled garden sometimes has things on

Do go on a boat trip from the Seabird Centre! (Although avian flu has hit the Bass Rock, unfortunately.)

IDontLikeMondays88 · 23/07/2022 13:47

I second Drift, the Bonnie Badger and the Walled Garden at Archerfield.

Herringbone for dinner and drinks
Whitekirkhill for lunch
Zittos for Italian

Might be worth noting the Fringe by the Sea will be on in Aug. Prices for the Marine have more than doubled. We've had to book further out as there's not much availability

Belindabelle · 23/07/2022 18:18

Thanks for the suggestions. Will have one reluctant teen with me but as long as there is Wi-Fi and food he won’t mind what we do.

Agree with Drift but would very much suggest booking your table in advance as can be very hard to get a seat inside. Tables outside as well though, for good weather. The Drift roll (egg, bacon, spinach and aoli) is amazing.

I would normally suggest Tantallon Castle and Direlton Castle but I think they're both shut at the moment. Would check nearer time.

Steampunk Coffee in NB itself is fantastic.

There's a couple of old fashioned sweatshops on the High Street for nostalgia.

Waitwhat23 · 23/07/2022 18:29

The shop Whynot on North Berwick High Street has a Cafe in the back and also, which I didn't realise until recently, a really lovely outside area.

Yellowcraigs Beach and Gullane Beach fairly nearby are lovely. And if you're in Gullane, then there's the fabulous Bonnie Badger!

There's loads more - East Lothian is a fantastic area.

Alandas for ice cream and the chippy on the same row is decent. Lots of independent shops which are really nice.

Menopants · 23/07/2022 18:49

Steampunk for pretentious coffee, lobster shack for great fresh seafood

Menopants · 23/07/2022 18:49

Bostock bakery for seriously expensive cake and bread

WorriedMillie · 23/07/2022 18:52

Shamelessly following, as we are heading there next week.
Thanks so much for all of the suggestions 😍

Waitwhat23 · 23/07/2022 19:45

Hmm, WhyNot may not still have a Cafe. It does have some really lovely local producers though.

I like the Coastal Museum but your teen might find it a bit dull.

my, North Berwick has changed since I was there!

Emptybeaches · 23/07/2022 20:24

Whatever you do don’t miss the Cruffins in the Bostock bakery.

They are utterly delicious.

Ours were filled with Pistachio cream and raspberry compote but I think the flavours vary.

FayeGovan · 23/07/2022 20:30

Alandas ice cream for sure

I know, I only caught the typo when I did a later post and thought arrgh!

Sweet shop, not sweat shop!

Went to Zittos for the first time yesterday, really enjoyed it.

feellikeanalien · 23/07/2022 20:57

We went for DDs birthday last year and stayed at the Nether Abbey Hotel. We also ate at the Rocketeer at the harbour which was very nice. First time I'd been to North Berwick and thought it was really nice but parking was horrendous.

Had a lovely day at Yellowcraigs beach and also enjoyed just wandering along the beach and the high street.

Belindabelle · 23/07/2022 21:16

Thank you so much everyone.

.I am really looking forward to going. Sure the teenager will pretend to be bored, when are they ever anything else. I think secretly he will enjoy it and I will certainly have a great trip down memory lane.

Love North Berwick. I think The Rocketeer does a good fish and chips.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/07/2022 21:27

We used have a caravan in NB and we plan to revisit in October. The places we loved were Sugar Mountain, Stop and Shop and the Seabird Centre. I hope they are all still there. Plus the chip shop. It's a lo lovely place.

garlictwist · 25/07/2022 18:51

We went to North Berwick last winter. Really pretty town and lovely beaches. The surrounding countryside was quite meh, I thought, but the coast was nice.
