Edinburgh at New Year

BG2015 · 24/06/2022 18:05

We're going to Edinburgh 28thDec - 2nd Jan. staying in a great Airbnb.

Can anyone advise what the situation is for New Years Eve please? The best place to go, how much for tickets etc?

Also any suggestions of restaurants we could book in advance as presume they get booked up quickly.

We're staying on Forth Street and flying up from Birmingham.

Thanks

What defines “best place to go” for you? Mine would be at home and in bed before the bells!! I believe the street party will be back this year and you need tickets for that. Or do you just want a restaurant for NYE?

Believe me we are both normally asleep on NYE but after a number of years being woken up by our neighbours who have a party every year we decided to book a break away.

We have no idea about how it all works on NYE. We may just eat in the airbnb and then go out to soak up the atmosphere.

any advice is greatly welcomed

The angels share is really nice and I like the cosy little bars on rose street

The Witcher y looks lovely but too expensive for me!

You can’t really just go out and soak up the atmosphere, the street party is ticketed (and sells out in advance). You could possibly walk up Calton Hill to catch the fireworks.
Note that the 1st is a wipe out in the city centre - skeleton bus service and very little open, and anything that does tends to be a late opening (national museum is usually noon).

You really need to see if you can get tickets otherwise, you can’t just head out and hope you will get into the Main Street party area. Forth Street is nice and central. Princes Street will be open as usual for shops etc on the day but it does close down to the public as the day goes on. It used to be that you could stay within the party gates if you were out shopping or eating but it meant hanging around all afternoon and evening in the cold which isn’t ideal, particularly when shops close so no where to go for warmth.

You need to book all meals and book bars. Just get them booked so you have options and can cancel on the day if you decide against something. You won’t get anywhere without booking as it is so busy. Open table will give you lots of options.

i think tickets for the street party are due to be released this month.

The Loonie Dook in South Queensferry is worth heading out to see. It’s on the 1st and good if it’s a cold, clear day. Some good places to stop for lunch in the Ferry but again they need booked well in advance.
