Dorset/Bournemouth

Currently living in the midlands.

Travelling down to Dorset/Bournemouth for the first time for a week in the summer.

Thinking of splitting the week so a few days in Bournemouth then on to somewhere else, not driving so needs to be accessible, on trains ideally.

Any recommendations of places not too far away that are worth a visit?

Very doable by public transport, I often leave the car at home. You can get the open top bus from Bournemouth to Studland beach and then boat trip to Brownsea Island. You could eat at Bankes Arms, lunch or dinner, Knoll House Hotel - afternoon tea on the lawn, Rick Stein’s in Sandbanks or The Pig (I haven’t eaten at The Pig yet). Steam train trip on the Swanage railway, they do dining evenings too (haven’t tried the food). Corfe Castle is worth a visit and the NT also has cottages for rent. Summer theatre and open air cinema at Corfe Castle. If I get the train down from London I sometimes go to Wareham to get the bus. Ice cream by the river and there is a nice looking hotel, The Priory. Durlston Castle has a low key art gallery and cafe. Lots of great walks.

The Russell Coates museum in Bournemoth is an historic house with lovely paintings and all sorts and has events on.

Bournemouth beach is long and sandy.

Good to hear from LadyLapsang that the public transport is good as that's important to me too what with the sustainability advantage and cost of petrol!
