Hi does anyone have any restaurant recommendations? And things to do whilst we're there for 2 nights for my 30th birthday. Thanks!

The Magpie is worth the wait for a fish and chip lunch.

The Star Inn the Harbour.

We went in May and struggled a little with the restaurants as neither of us eat fish 🙈

I'd recommend Cosa Nostra Italian restaurant - definitely book at least a week in advance as it gets busy. Was really nice :) Also Passage to India if you like a curry. There is also a Chinese restaurant called the Long King which was nice, if a bit pricey.

Also had a lovely meal at Papa's fish and chips.

As for other recommendations, we did a really nice walk along the coastline, to the lighthouse and then back to the Abbey. The microbrewery up near the Abbey is really cool, might be a good shout for a 30th :)

Take a steam train to Pickering and back. You might even be able to get afternoon tea in a Pullman.

Walk the length of the beach to Sandsend (several sweet cafes - the best is Wits End, tucked next to the car park toilets!) and back.

if you’ve got a car, drive over the moors to Egton Bridge. Decent pub grub, beautiful church and stepping stones to jump across.

The Abbey is a must and the adjoining museum is good on what life was like for monks. The 199 steps up must be done, and counted.

Pannet Park museum has some really weird and wonderful exhibits, including almost complete dinosaur skeleton.

Lots of quirky shops to look round - you can lose half a day easily.

Boat trip - might see seals.

The Magpie is great, but if the queues are too horrendous, Trenchers near the station matches it for quality of F&C.

Thanks for all your replies definitely try the magpie, abbey walk, microbrewery and boat trip I'll have a nosey at the other restaurants too!

Pizza West is excellent. Not just pizza and has a lovely vibe. It's relaxed but foodie. Booking essential.

I recommend you check the tide times and visit the fossil beach at low tide. It's left if you are facing the 199 steps to the abbey. You will pass an amazing kipper smoker place if you are interested.

Star Inn is very nice

I really liked Albert’s eatery: it’s in the Whitby Jet museum and is really quirky but nice food.

There is a pub just a little along from Alberts eatery as well, The White Horse and Griffin where we had an awesome meal.

Magpie cafe is very good.

Also really did quite like Abbey Wharf for a drink overlooking the harbor.

DontKeepTheFaith · 14/06/2022 19:08

Just to add, best to book, otherwise you will just queue!

Re things to do, loads in Whitby itself but if you are a walker, the walk from Whitby to Staithes along the coastal path is amazing. Staithes is just charming. Have to time it right with the tide to pass through Runswick bay but if you get it right, it’s an awesome walk and you can finish with late lunch at the cod and lobster in Staithes before getting the bus back.

i wasn't massively impressed by The Magpie. Really packed and they seemed to want us out asap. The food was fine.

I love Papas for a slightly retro fish and chips vibe and Abbey Wharf is in a great location and does great cocktails and food.

Kayjay2018 · 14/06/2022 19:20

I love Whitby and really enjoyed a little place called The Blitz https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/RestaurantReview-g186345-d10146962-Reviews-TheeBlitz-WhitbyScarboroughhDistrictNorthhYorkshireEngland.html

Steam train is lovely as is a walk along the sand to Sandsend. We've also walked all the way to Robin Hoods bay, I think it's called the cinder trail, and bussed back home.

ChristinaBlang · 14/06/2022 19:27

The magpie is over rated, you want the silver street chippy. Public toilets are gross and you have to pay but weatherspoons ones are fine and they do cheap bottomless hot drinks.
The south beach is great for fossil hunting and there is a ship wreck to explore.
the boat trips are good, the longer ones can spot whales, dolphins and seals.

OwletteGeckoCatboy · 15/06/2022 14:15

Great thanks everyone :)

I really like Sherlock's Coffee Shop, although I haven't been for a while.

Hbh17 · 15/06/2022 19:24

Go to the Abbey, but also check if they are doing the performance of "Dracula" there this year - it used to run several times a day in the summer. One of the best & funniest things I have ever seen - you just follow the actors around the Abbey. No need to book.

StopDontTalkToMe · 15/06/2022 19:33

Magpies is good but NOT worth the wait, in fact Trenchers or Quayside are better.
Pizza West is fab, a friend owns it so I would say that 😊

Have a lovely time.

Putasmellonyou · 15/06/2022 19:36

Oh you have to do the cliff walk from the Abbey to Saltwick bay, make sure you time it when the tides out and have a good hunt for fossils and explore the shipwrecks

ladymalfoy45 · 15/06/2022 19:42

Moutrey's for pizza. you can take food into The Endeavour . Humble Pie opposite same you can eat in or take away.
call in at the TI and you can pick up a couple of guides to wandering the East and West part of the town.
Pannet Park Gallery and Museum. Fossils, jet and a Hand of Glory......

QuestionableMouse · 15/06/2022 19:47

When are you going? The Regatta is on soon, and it'll be heaving. We were going to go to see the planes but I might watch them from somewhere else 😂🤔

Sallyingon · 15/06/2022 20:11

I'm a big Trenchers fan. Last time we were there we went twice. I had fish and chips one night and seafood salad the next.

We're going the 26th and 27th June which is a shame because some things are closed Sunday, Monday!

Silver Street do very good fish and chips

DinosaursEatMan · 15/06/2022 21:28

Another recommendation for Trenchers. Buying a lucky duck at Whitby Glass is fun for kids.
