NT is best for us (one ourdoorsy 5 year old) as we live on the edge of the Peak District, they manage a lot of car parks and a lot of open moorland and walking paths (it's not all fancy houses)

I was pondering this myself. I like ruins and gardens, not so keen on stately homes.
You can get EH membership with Tesco clubcard points. I have loads of them unused as there hasn't been much to spend them on recently.
It's also worth knowing that NT is much cheaper for under 25s. DS loves NT houses and gardens and makes good use of his.
