Yorkshire suggestions from Scarborough

We are heading to Yorkshire in the summer; just outside Scarborough. Can people give me good advice on what to do? Older children, 10 and up. Need a mix of outdoors and general Yorkshire brilliance (beaches, places to eat for veggies, things to do)

On the list is:
A day in York (and recommdations?)
Steam train over the moors to whitby
Robin Bay
Segway in forest, (can't remember it's name but we can do it locally to where we live do can skip. We've done lots of high ropes so probably not interested in this).
I'm also looking for a good 3-4 hour walk; family tradition that despite the moaning, everyone secretly really enjoys!

I’d skip the full train ride and just visit the various stations and ride between goathland and grosmont and walk the rail trail the other way.
Sutton bank great walks and views if it’s a clear day.
Filet brigg but get the tide times right
Flamborough head is definitely worth a visit, there are various beaches.
Bridlington south beach is good for swimming.
Saltburn for surfing or Humnamby gap.
You can walk from robin hoods bay to Scarborough on the old railway line but it’s a long walk

Fivemoreminutes1 · 14/04/2022 20:07

In York, I’d recommend a wander down The Shambles, have a slice of cake or a ‘fat rascal’ at Betty’s, climb the Minster, York Castle museum and the Chocolate Story.
Dalby Forest has segways but also has loads of good walks and bike hire.
Your dc will probably enjoy Alpamere waterpark or the Aqua Park at North Yorkshire Water Park.

Visit Whitby for the day... stunning !

historygeek · 14/04/2022 20:11

Sutton Bank is great for bike rides. Can hire bikes and do MTB or pump tracks.
Helmsley is a gorgeous little village nearby and the National Centre for Birds of Prey is fantastic.
Saltwick Bay near Whitby is fab for fossil hunting.
It's a beautiful part of the world!

MrsPnut · 14/04/2022 20:17

Bus from Scarborough to Bempton Garage, then walk from there to Bempton cliffs and carry on around the coast via Flamborough head and Sewerby to Bridlington then you can catch the bus back to Scarborough.

MrsPnut · 14/04/2022 20:17

Danes Dyke is also a fantastic beach, loads of fossils to be found and it’s off the beaten track.

MrsMAgain · 14/04/2022 20:18

Puffins at Bempton Cliffs RSPB Reserve, mid-April to mid-July usually. Lots of seabirds and other birds at different times too.

Belkell · 14/04/2022 20:24

You’re thinking of Dalby forest for Segway.

There’s also go ape and bike hire, occasional outdoor cinema and loads of other stuff…

MrsMAgain · 14/04/2022 20:25

Scarborough Fair Collection - have a look at the website first.

ivegotthisyeah · 14/04/2022 20:28

Flamingo land ?
National railway museum in York

Steam train is incredibly expensive! As is the water park in Scarborough. Walk to Filey along the coast is nice.

York is incredible, loads to see and do. Google things to do in York. Walk around the walls, railway museum, Yorvik, Dig, shopping. Betty's for a fat rascal

cameocat · 16/04/2022 09:28

Thanks for the heads up on expense!

I'm dying to know what a fat rascal is!

Whitby, Robins Hood Bay, North Yorkshire Moors - lovely part of the country

cherrypiepie · 16/04/2022 09:41

Fat rascal is special scone from Bettys tearoom!

As for the railway park at grosmont get singles to Goathland and walk back along the rail trail to the car. About 2-3 hours of beautiful easy walking )as long as you are mobile a few steps. Advise you to buy the rail trail guide from grosmont shop with a map
And some history. Goathland is "heartbeat country" And there are train hangars (wrong word but the correct word has disappeared from my brain)

It's beautiful and this time of year it's full of bluebells if you time it right and are lucky . Lovely day out one of my favourite did it as child and as an adult.

Would do a day in Whitby.

Scarborough for amusements and beach

Fuuuuuckit · 17/04/2022 10:15

I travelled all the way across the county for a fat rascal yesterday, they'd run out by 3.30.

GO EARLY. THESE ARE NOT TO BE MISSED

Day out in Whitby? Walk there from robin hoids bay? Loads of walks in north York moors. Lovely walks round goathland and a nice pub there. My kids are teens now but they still enjoy going to honeysuckle farm at Hornsea.

A fat rascal is a bit like a mash up of a scone, rock cake and Eccles cake.

@cameocat - go for a Hawk Walk at the National Centre for Birds of Prey at Helmsley. Or, as pp, just visit. I sponsor a Great Grey Owl!

Walk up Rosberry Topping.
If your DC are of an age where the watched”Old Jack’s Boat” on CBeebies, they might recognise the village of Staithes!
YY to a day in Whitby, boat trip, sea swimming (?), fairground rides, slot machines, chips, pottering. If you go in Regatta week, there’s loads going on.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/04/2022 10:32

Rotunda Museum (geology) if you have a wet day.
Alpamare water park.

Both Scarborough

Bempton Cliffs, although the puffins will be gone by summer holidays.

Time40 · 17/04/2022 10:54

Have a really good long walk around Filey - it's such a lovely little town.

MrsMAgain · 17/04/2022 11:39

Don't miss Sterchi's hand made chocolate shop in Filey too - their little cakes are also a must - and The Brown Room for good old traditional no frills sit down fish and chips.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 18/04/2022 19:44

A day in York (and recommdations?)

  • A boat ride along the River Ouse
  • Visit the Chocolate Story in the city centre that tells you all about the city's chocolate history
  • National Railway Museum - free entry (just need to pay for parking if you're coming by car) great for kids, sometimes has Thomas and the Hogwarts Express too Smile If you're wanting to go for afternoon tea at Betty's be prepared to queue!! Betty's queue gets insane lol
Verite1 · 18/04/2022 19:45

York Maze is great fun. My kids love it.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 18/04/2022 20:01

Yes, agree York Maze is absolutely brilliant.
Been a few years (different theme every year)
Not in the city centre though, don't know if that's important as you didn't say how you'd be getting there?
Bit out in the sticks (on the outskirts) and relying on public transport)

cameocat · 18/04/2022 22:59

We are travelling by car so the maze would be an easy option. Just looked up the fat rascal as it looked like it had marshmallows on top which are mostly not vegetarian. They are vegetarian and you can also get them delivered, might have to try for fun.
