Yorkshire suggestions from Scarborough

We are heading to Yorkshire in the summer; just outside Scarborough. Can people give me good advice on what to do? Older children, 10 and up. Need a mix of outdoors and general Yorkshire brilliance (beaches, places to eat for veggies, things to do)

On the list is:
A day in York (and recommdations?)
Steam train over the moors to whitby
Robin Bay
Segway in forest, (can't remember it's name but we can do it locally to where we live do can skip. We've done lots of high ropes so probably not interested in this).
I'm also looking for a good 3-4 hour walk; family tradition that despite the moaning, everyone secretly really enjoys!

Alpamare is expensive.
What about a day at the North Yorkshire Water Park? Aka Wykeham Lakes. Loads to do. www.northyorkshirewaterpark.co.uk/

We were in York today, we had such a lovely day but it was very very busy.

You can book surf lessons in Scarborough. There's a fun fair, boat rides. You can walk from one end to the other and some of the views are lovely. Last summer itain strip was packed.

Love dalby forest, there is also go ape there as well.

There's a lovely walk at Gotham with a waterfall. Our kids like a little paddle and a picnic.

Flamingo is a great day out.

The leisure centre in brid has a good pool as well as clip and climb.

Thisbastardcomputer · 18/04/2022 23:14

@Fuuuuuckit I ordered fat rascals online at Betty's fresh and well packaged

cameocat · 18/04/2022 23:15

These are great suggestions thank you! So glad the surf is good enough for lessons as it means it is worth taking our boards (we can all surf but have done less surfing in the uk).

If you start at Sutton Bank National Park Centre, you can walk north along part of the Cleveland Way to the fantastic High Paradise Farm for lunch. It's about 1hr 30 walking to reach the farm with amazing views. And amazing food as a reward!

Helmsley is a nice posh village to mooch about in and you can walk from the village to Rievaulx Abbey or up to Duncombe Park and back along the river.

Alpamare water park in Scarborough has a brilliant spa - it's never busy as most people only visit the water park!

Eden Camp museum is a fascinating visit . There are numerous great restaurants for vegetarians. Two of our favourites are The Hideout and Kam Sang. Keep an eye of this website for some great voucher deals on attractions and restaurants. Have a wonderful holiday! 🌊🌞

Bempton Cliffs to see the puffins

Scarborough North Beach has beach huts you can hire for the day, including 2 storey ones.

Bridlington, while not on its uppers at the moment, has a lovely South beach with modernised front, it's lovely on an evening when quiter and the tide is out.

Whitby has a lovely walk from the beach to Sandsend with a very nice cafe at Sandsend, again, check tide times.

Also in Whitby at the bridge that crosses from the new town side to the old town side if you look on the right hand side there is a lower pathway where lots of people are crabbing, including teenagers. The crabbing buckets and bets can be bought cheap at any of the seaside shops.

SaffyWall · 19/04/2022 09:47

Another vote for walking to High Paradise Farm for afternoon tea!

Also, Falling Foss Gardens/Cafe is lovely.

If you go to Helmlsey there's an open-air pool which is load of fun (you'll need to book though, particularly in good weather.)

Birds of Prey Centre at Duncombe Park, near Helmsley

Museum of Victoria Science is totally bonkers and fun (near Whitby)

Malton has lots to offer - Eden Camp, Roman Museum, Art Deco Cinema, lots of lovely food places.

JanePrentiss · 19/04/2022 09:51

In Scarborough check out Groovy No ice cream patlour

Best fish and chip shop is a tiny place called lifeboat fisheries, opposite the yellow joke shop just off the front!

If you are into surfing check out Cayton Bay - just down the road from Scarborough and a popular surfing spot.

Oakdog · 19/04/2022 09:54

A walk around the Hole of Horcum is pretty spectacular, with some lovely Moors views. If you parked at Saltersgate car park, and timed it right, you could call at the pub at Levisham for lunch.

WhatHaveIFound · 19/04/2022 09:55

How about The Forbidden Corner?

Eden Camp is good too and there's a Sutton Bank White Horse walk. It's about 3 miles and if it's good weather the gliders will be flying.

JanePrentiss · 19/04/2022 09:58

The Deep at Hull - it was previously City of Culture so not sure how you would feel about making a day out there?

Beverley is a beautiful market town if you fancy a potter about - Park on the bottom end of the golf course where the cows usually potter about.

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 19/04/2022 10:08

I love Robin Hoods Bay near Whitby . Beautiful little fishing village. Beach with rock pools. Lovely little shops including a Fossil museum and Book shop and quaint little cafés and the little fishmonger has fresh King prawns to die for ! Absolutley love it !

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 19/04/2022 10:13

Thought of another one . Peasholm Park in Scarborough. Has the most amazing Grey squirrels you can feed off your hand a boating Lake and Ice cream parlour. In the summer they have World War 2 navel warfare battle on the lake . Amazing !

This is all so brilliant, thank you. I'm far too excited now and have to wait till the summer holidays (and maybe extend our booking by a week!)

Enjoy your holiday Op!

The east coast is a lovely spot, and if your family can be entertained with walks, exploring, days on the beach, you will have a fantastic time.

And there is an ancient law that when visiting a seaside town you have to spend your own body weight in 2 pence coins on the 2 penny push machines!

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 19/04/2022 22:30

Ravenscar has a beautiful walk down to the beach where the seals are always lazing about and a tea room too. I live in Scarborough and agree with all the other suggestions too!

Gazelda · 19/04/2022 22:43

We've just come back from York. Had a brilliant time exploring.
City cruise
City buses with tour guide
Minster
Shambles
Chocolate story
Betty's
Railway museum
Walk the walls
Bloody York tour with Mad Alice
Yorvik
Clifford's tower

We got a 3 day York Pass which saved us money on entry fees.

And we got a 7 day Park & Ride for 14 each. Easy to park outside city with buses every 15 mins or so. I think there's 4 P&R sites, including the outlet centre if shopping is your thing.

Trumpetpants · 19/04/2022 22:51

Alpamare is pricey but so worth it! There is an outdoor pool that is as warm as Bath water and you can relax in that whilst enjoying the most amazing view of the sea and the castle.
The kids loved the various slides too but it was the amazingly warm outdoor pool that sold it to me x

thesparkthatbled · 19/04/2022 22:59

Hole of horcum is a lovely walk on the Moors, park at Saltersgate carpark.

Another nice walk is from Goathland down to Malyan Spout waterfall and then along to Beck Hole for a pint in the teeny tiny pub and back to Goathland, you'll no doubt see the steam trains go past which is generally more exciting than actually going on one.

Helmsley is a very cute little town with lots of nice walks, tearooms etc.

York it pretty much wall to wall cafes /delis/restaurants so I would skip Betty's and find somewhere probably nicer that doesn't have a huge queue. Barley Hall is a cool little museum tucked away, medieval social history, dress up etc. Chocolate Story is really good as well
