Stoke - what can we do there?

I’m off to Stoke on Sunday to meet my (long distance) partner. We normally have a weekend or two together each month, but this month we can only manage an afternoon. We are meeting in Stoke and I’d like to not sit in the pub all day, but equally, we are both arriving by train and won’t want to travel too far away from the station, as we’ve only got 4 or 5 hours.

Can anyone recommend nice things to do in Stoke centre please? Thank you

I actually think Stoke station is really nice. The large overall roof lends it a conservatory feel and protects well against bad weather while the warm red brick and stone buildings have an almost homely feel. There are several bars and cafes to choose from and parking and drop off, buses etc are all very close and convenient.

Thank you @LardyDee, I’ll have a look and see. It’s nice to have local info :)

There's lots of pottery shops in Stoke.

There's a nice cafe in Stoke itself - on the former Spode factory site. It's just a few minutes walk from Stoke train station.

This must be sarcastic, yes...??

Trentham Shopping Village is nice, as are Trentham Gardens. Or if you’d prefer something a bit more adventurous Trentham Monkey Forest or Water World.

I’m sorry, but Stoke is a dump. Is there anywhere wlse uou could both arrange to meet via train?

thedefinitionofmadness · 28/03/2022 22:16

Why Stoke? I mean, I grew up there but its not what I'd think of as conventional date territory

Emma Bridgewater cafe in Hanley
Spode works/cafe
Hanley Park is nice for a walk .....but its just a park
Trentham Gardens is nice but its a taxi drive away

I assume you've never been to Stoke before? There's very little in Stoke itself (the Spode Museum which I LOVE but wouldn't occupy even me for 4 hours).

You could get a bus from the station to Hanley which has a 'proper' town centre and also a museum and art gallery. Or maybe walk, it's about 1.5 miles, some of it through Hanley Park.

Or a taxi to Trentham Gardens in the opposite direction, about 4 miles. I haven't been but I've heard it's lovely.

Are you active types? Kilnworx climbing wall is good, in an old converted church.

A walk along the canal (north better than south) could be a possibility - up to Westport Lake where there's a little cafe. Middleport Pottery is en route, which is also worth seeing. It's not picturesque exactly, but a nice wander, and through some really interesting old industrial sites.

Grab a 10 min cab to Trentham Gardens and pay to go inside the Italian gardens if the weather is ok. Lots of nice shops to wander around and plenty of cafes and restaurants.
Stoke it's self is a dump. I live nearby and avoid at all costs.

Trentham Gardens. Well worth a look around for a few hours. Pottery museum as well.

Stoke itself, apart from shops, as others have said, it's a dump.

Stoke is horrible. Taxi to Trentham a good idea, but obviously adds to the costs of travel.
