DD is doing about witches at college and I was wondering about visiting Pendle
We are only about an hour away so it doesn’t have to be amazing but I was wondering whether anyone knew if there was anything Witch like worth seeing there?
Plus somewhere nice to have lunch

www.pendleheritage.co.uk/ The museum at Barrowford is good and the tea room excellent. Opens again at Easter.

Barley is one of the villages you can walk up Pendle from, but if you’d rather admire it from below there is a nice little walk past Black Moss Reservoir up through the pines to a sculpture trail (some are looking a bit weathered now but there’s a nice one at the end that depicts the women accused of witchcraft). The Pendle Inn has good food, not eaten anywhere else apart from the cafe on the car park, which does excellent bacon butties.

Would echo the barrowford visitors centre and there’s also a shop called Witches Galore in Newchurch in Pendle. I’ve just signed the petition in the library in clitheroe to ask that they get pardoned.

Malkin Child by Livi Michael is a brilliant addition to the volumes of literature about the women, if she hasn’t already read it.
The whole area has a quiet watchfulness tbh. Friendly, because of tourism, but you can fully imagine those little hamlets you travel through turning their backs on women because it was in their best interests to do so.
Has she been to Lancaster Castle, where they were imprisoned? At one time they would shut you in one of the dungeons on the tour (if you wanted !) and I can still remember a Guide visit where I did that and it was terrifying.

Did anyone else read the thread title and think “ooh, another Wordle spin-off”?

No, but I did think “thank goodness there’s no extra Hill on there” because both Pen and dle mean hill, so Hillhill Hill just looks stupid.

Let us know how it goes as we have never been. I think many places had witches but Pendle is more well known, I seem to remember a programme on Netflix etc about it?

I’m from this area and actually did costume for a play about the Pendle Witches, and I only just found out they have a statue of Alice Nutter in Roughlee, the village where she was from. To be honest I don’t know, but people tend to go to Barley. Also there is the Pendle Witches Walking trail with relevant locations. Visit Lancashire has a leaflet about it, where to go www.visitlancashire.com/dbimgs/Pendle_Witches_Trail.pdf

I’m sure you already looked on Wikipedia but anyway it might help, en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendle_witches
