Cheddar area

Hi

We’ve just booked a break for a week in the Easter holidays at a Hoseasons resort near Cheddar. Two adults, a 5yo and a 10yo. There’s lots to do on-site, but we love to get out and see sights.

Can anyone tell me what’s worth doing in the area? Obviously we will have a look at Cheddar Gorge, but any particular thing to do there? I’ve seen the Wooky Hole Caves advertised, are they worth it? We also have a National Trust membership, so are any of those worth it on the area?

Thanks!

Wooky Hole :)

Ifailed · 19/02/2022 11:26

Cheddar Gorge is pretty impressive to walk/drive up, the town itself is just full of tacky shops. Wooky hole is ok, but 2 adults & 2 children is £72!
Wells is nice town for a wander about, and Glastonbury Tor is an interesting walk - again ignore the town as it's full of crap.

Tyntesfield is a beautiful NT place to visit nearby. Also Brean Down is great - you can walk all the way to an old Fort at the end and on a clear day you can see across to Weston-super-Mare, one of the Severn bridges and the Welsh coast. Inland, there's Glastonbury for a hippy vibe and a climb up the Tor or the Willows and Wetlands visitor centre out on the levels a bit closer to Taunton.

Bath -Roman baths plus shopping and eating and museums
National Trust -Tyntesfield, montacute house, barrington court
East Somerset railway
Glastonbury Tor
If like cars Haynes motor museum
The Newt
Somerset Life Museum
Wells bishops palace and gardens and cathedral
Beaches and Exmoor
Bristol has loads of attractions
Plus many more!!

Wookey Hole interesting but as noted expensive. Somerset Life Museum in Glastonbury really good. Concorde at the Fleet Air Arm museum not too far away.

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 12:10

Great ideas, thanks!

That is expensive for wooky hole! Maybe if we’re desperate and it’s raining Grin

We’ve been to Bath before, but pre-kids. I think they would like the Roman baths.

Great that there’s NT places near that are good, we’ll definitely go to one of those!

I’ve read many threads where Glastonbury is mentioned for being creepy etc! We drove through it many years ago and didn’t feel like stopping…

We did wookey hole a few years ago and were pleasantly surprised. So yes quite expensive but we felt worth it.

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 13:18

Had a Google of them all. Tyntesfield house looks the best NT place with kids? Will definitely go there.

Break Down looks lovely, definitely up for that.

The most exciting looks Haynes Motor Museum - we’re big F1 fans, so would all love it! Thanks for the tip @Bellie99

Cheese shop

goingpearshaped · 19/02/2022 13:21

You can do wookey hole on clubcard vouchers. Longleat good also. Glastonbury is indeed grim but Wells is lovely.

goingpearshaped · 19/02/2022 13:21

Clubcard works for Longleat too actually.

goingpearshaped · 19/02/2022 13:23

If you go to Tyntsfield, make sure you see the wooden play area which is easy to miss (uphill and a bit hidden away)

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 13:25

@goingpearshaped

We’ve done Longleat before. It was good, but we’re members of a zoo and have had enough of animals for now! Thanks though. We don’t shop at Tesco, but how long would it take us to get enough club card points for it to help at Wooky hole?!

Also - thanks for the play area tip! It’s my first thing to check with any NT place! My boys love climbing and exploring on the play areas

Yes, at Tyntesfield head uphill into the forest/wooded area then you'll find about 4-5 different play areas along the ridge. The Pooing Chicken is a favourite (you'll see what I mean!) Grin
There is also another play area near the kitchen gardens.

Frazzled2207 · 19/02/2022 14:18

We went last summer. As above- we love tyntesfield.

We also loved the walk along the top of the cliffs at cheddar gorge and had a great beach day out at Brean. Tacky but fun and there is a good pool.

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 14:34

@APurpleSquirrel

A pooing chicken sounds right up my boys’ street Grin

@Bellie99

Don’t worry! I have a colour-coded spreadsheet, with distance, cost and preference order! (I wish I was joking, but I have covid so this is occupying me!). We’re not good at sitting still, we need to keep busy!

Cheddar caves are reopening at Easter.
Can cycle along the Strawberry line from Cheddar to Yatton.
Lots of lovely walks on the Mendip hills; Blackdown and or Crooks Peak.
There is 'the wave' near Bristol for surfing?

Bimblybomeyelash · 19/02/2022 15:15

Ham wall for bird watching.

Spindelina · 19/02/2022 15:50

Helicopter museum at WsM.

angieb89 · 19/02/2022 15:52

All what was said above. Also Noah's Ark Zoo is great!!

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 16:05

More ideas for my spreadsheet! Thanks!

We adults don’t have bikes and the youngest hasn’t mastered it yet, so cycling is out. Although nature lovers, not bird watchers. And my surfing skills from a lesson in Australia 15 years ago means I’m a tad rusty Grin If you met DH, you would also realise the hilarity at the idea of him surfing
