Cheddar area

Hi

We’ve just booked a break for a week in the Easter holidays at a Hoseasons resort near Cheddar. Two adults, a 5yo and a 10yo. There’s lots to do on-site, but we love to get out and see sights.

Can anyone tell me what’s worth doing in the area? Obviously we will have a look at Cheddar Gorge, but any particular thing to do there? I’ve seen the Wooky Hole Caves advertised, are they worth it? We also have a National Trust membership, so are any of those worth it on the area?

Thanks!

Depending on how far you want to travel these are other localish attractions:

Kilve Beach for fossils
Bream Splash
We the Curious Bristol
Stourhead NT (no play areas though)
The Quantocks
Ocean Adventurers (soft play in Cheddar)
Yeo Valley Canteen
Kilver Court
Clark's Village

Thanks! Will keep googling. We don’t want to spend e whole week driving, so probably 30 mins max, with maybe one a bit further - which I think will be the motor museum!

Bristol zoo?

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 17:20

@PolkaSpace

We’re members of another well-reputed zoo, so we’re a bit zooed-out!

Fair enough. Erm.. thatchers factory shop

PolkaSpace · 19/02/2022 18:00

There's a massive old boat In Bristol harbour

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 18:03

Massive boat and Thatchers sound good!

HMS Great Britain you mean?! More than just an massive ship! 🤣🤣

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/02/2022 21:42

So many good ideas.
Weston has a helicopter museum and a nice indoor museum. The seafront is nice on a sunny day.

Axbridge is walking distance and has some nice pubs for food. I like The Lamb.

Are you staying at Cheddar Woods?

WutheredOut · 19/02/2022 21:45

Puxton park is a brilliant day out with young kids

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 21:46

@Theimpossiblegirl

Yes we are staying at Cheddar Woods! I’d picked up on The Lamb on their reviews actually. Good to hear it seconded.

Is there anywhere near to do with Cheddar Cheese? A museum, or place that makes it that’s nice to visit? A particular shop that’s good?

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 21:51

@WutheredOut

That’s good to know. It’s exactly the kind of thing we usually look for, but often when you get there, they’re a disappointment. We went to one last summer in Wales and how it ever passed health and safety is beyond me and it hadn’t been spruced up since the 80s I reckon! Looked great on their website!

There's a museum attached to a cheese shop in the gorge. Cheddar itself is a nice town.

There is so much to do around here, it really is lovely.

If you like walks you will be spoilt for choice.

Ohyesiam · 19/02/2022 21:56

I won tickets to wookey hole abs I remember thinking I was really glad I didn’t have to pay. It’s really lame.
They have a circus school there and the performance was impressive, but that’s it.
Next to Wookey hope is a really gorgeous walk along Ebor gorge, I don’t think it’s very well signed but there is a NT car park. It’s beautiful Lord off the Rings type landscape with a great view when you get to the top.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/02/2022 22:06

DD grew up thinking that cheese is a vegetable, because she saw them “growing” in the caves at Cheddar when she was 3 or 4. She’s 10 now, and not entirely convinced otherwise.

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 22:08

Right, I think we’ll save the pennies and not do Wooky caves. There are other caves at the gorge that should be open. Cheese shop and museum and the gorge too. Perfect.

As for walks, yes we love a walk. But, the youngest will have only just turned 5 when we go. He is risk-averse, can’t be trusted, will suddenly dart off, won’t hold hands… so anything with an edge or drop is an issue!!

Wells isn't far from Cheddar and is a nice town to have a wander round- some shops the children would like, nice architecture, good places to eat. There's a lot in the area but it depends how much time you want to be travelling. Tyntefield is a nice visit, Portishead with its marina, Clevedon with its old pier and promenade and Bristol has huge amounts to do with a family. The waterfront is a nice place to visit with the family with MShed, SS Great Britain, places to eat and boats to see- but then in Bristol you've also got museums, the suspension bridge, the list goes on....

mnahmnah · 19/02/2022 22:48

It would be nice to explore Wells and Bristol. We love a bit of a wander around

You can do tours of the old prison at Shepton Mallet, which might be a good rain option.

Wren we stayed at Cheddar Woods we did :
Wookey Hole
Longleat Safari Park
A trip to Brean sands (hideous would not recommend)
A walk around the local country side that leads up to the reservoir nearby.
A drive through cheddar gorge.
My kids were quite little and I stayed for 3 or 4 nights so this was enough.

mnahmnah · 20/02/2022 11:22

@onthinice

That’s a shame about Brean sands. The walk looked good

How did you find Cheddar Woods? We’re spending more than other options that we’re available because it looked worth it for the facilities and activities

I think the walk is probably fine. I went with my miserable (now ex) husband and our intention was to walk on the beach with an ice cream. Unfortunately the beach is a car park and there is quick sand between the sand and sea so you can't get much of a beach walk. I seem to remember a National Trust walk out over a headland? I'd have liked to do this but unfortunately the ex wasn't up for it 😂

I liked cheddar Woods. I was insanely jealous of those with hot tubs! The lodge we had was really modern and clean. The swimming pool was again clean and modern, with some activities for the kids. We used the bar /restaurant which had a good menu and there was a small outside play area which my kids were the right sort of age for at the time. Lots of families brought bikes and the site seemed well laid out for this. I didn't find any good walks on the park but maybe I didn't look in the right place and this was around 5 years ago so things may have been added over time. It is pretty easy to get to off the M5 and I do intend to go back one day - next time I'll get a lodge with a tub!

mnahmnah · 20/02/2022 12:21

@onthinice

Sorry to say this, but… we’ve booked a hot tub! Grin

Not sure how far Dunster Castle is from Cheddar but that might be a good day out.

Theimpossiblegirl · 20/02/2022 14:05

Brean Sands is ok, the kids will love it. It's arcades, a theme park, a bit tacky but fun.
There's also a new ice rink near Bristol, at Cribbs.
Dunster, Minehead, Lynton and Lynmouth, Exmoor etc. are all within day out distance. The West Somerset Steam Railway is excellent too.
As well as the lamb, the new Inn at cross does good food. There's a walk up Crook's Peak from there, or you could drive to Glastonbury Tor or Brent Knoll for good views.
I'm very local, one of my teens cleans the lodges in the holidays.
